Congratulations to Evan Belford on the launch of RUCK Cancer tonight at Poneke Football Club. An initiative for fighting cancer and raising awareness for men. This includes regularly getting health checkups and talking about health concerns between team mates on and off the field. Breaking the stigma by being open about men’s health. Annually celebrated on 14 May for Purple Sock Day. At the end of the day, we are all in this together to kick cancers butt!!!!

REDUCE the risk by making healthy choices can help to reduce the risk of some cancers. For instance; not smoking, being SunSmart, being a healthy weight and reducing alcohol intake. 

UNDERSTAND more about your body and your family’s health history. Know what is normal for you and discuss any changes or concerns with your doctor 

CHECK yourself at the doctors regularly your doctor will advise about appropriate screening for you, considering age, family history, and other risk factors

KICK cancer in the butt. Consider the changes you can make to reduce your risk, and remember that many cancers can be treated (if found early).

5 things the rugby community need to know about cancer: 

A third of all cancers may be prevented with a healthy lifestyle. 

Many bowel cancers can be cured if found early. 

In NZ melanoma kills more men than women.

There is no “one size fits all” for prostate cancer testing and detection – talk to your Doctor.

PURPLE SOCK DAY 14 MAY:

Club Rugby/1st XVs during the blessing of the socks.

In the past 6 months, Wellington’s rugby community has lost two premier rugby players to cancer - Misiluni Moananu, Poneke Football Club/Wellington Football Club and Nene Va'alepu, Northern United. 

Evans idea is to bring together the Wellington rugby community by creating Purple Sock Day on 14 May. Purple is the ribbon colour that represents the awareness of all types of cancer.

On Saturday 14 May: Club Rugby/1st XVs . All senior club’s first teams, 1st XVs and referees wear purple socks 

5 minutes before kick-off senior club teams and 1st XV teams make their way to half way line, spread across the length of the field and form a guard of honour.

Cancer survivors from both clubs walk through the guard of honour. 

When survivors are on the field with the players, the referee signals a minute of silence in remembrance of all players and family members/friends we have lost to cancer.

At all grounds, there will be volunteers collecting donations on behalf of Cancer Society Wellington. Three dollar donations will also be able to be made by Text donation: “Text RUCK to 469 to donate $3” to Cancer Society.
