A total of 20 candidates will debate over two nights in late June. Among those who didn't qualify: Montana Gov. Steve Bullock, who is arguing that the party should let him in.
Choose Two Challenge:
How do you choose who to give money to in such a crowded field? I've been thinking about fandom and how that phenomenon might influence politics in a way that detracts from selecting the absolute best person for the job. What I mean is this:
I like X, I've stopped listening to everyone else.
Anyone else noticed this in yourself or others? (think about how people talk about their favorite characters in fiction)
With this many candidates, I'm finding it hard to give them all a fair shake. I've got my current fav, who's not been budged even when I hear good sense from others. That might or might not mean they're the best candidate.
But I don't want fandom behavior to choose the next president of the United States.
I propose the following challenge:
Choose two.
I haven't given any money yet, but I can swing $10 bucks for this early stage. So, based on whom I like best after the debates, I'll give $5 to each candidate.
That'll result in my inbox changing... because they do that and I get it.
That'll increase my exposure to potentially conflicting ideas for how to steer the country/world into the future.
That'll force me to be listening and not just fangirling when my darling says something shiny.
That'll force me to not just ignore the not shiny things my darling might say.
That'll force me to take a deeper look at what everyone has to offer.
I might even develop a score card of sorts. If I did, would you want me to share it with you?
Your price could be anything you choose. $0.10 or $0.02 for all I care. If a nickel per candidate is enough to put on the line to listen newly to everyone, could be good. Might not work at all, I've put no science behind this, just a little thoughtfulness.
