Lord Martyn Potter is a nobleman from the Westerlands, born at the small mountain stronghold of Godric's Hall. Although destined for a traditional noble upbringing, he chose a different path early in life and began his career at sea aboard a Lannister frigate commanded by Lord Farman, who would become both his mentor and one of the most influential figures in his life.
For the next twenty years, Martyn served under the banner of the Lions. His travels took him across much of the known world, from Slaver's Bay to the Summer Isles, participating in naval campaigns and supporting military operations against slavers and other enemies of King Cadwyn and the Westerlands.
After leaving active naval service, Martyn returned to a domestic life that had brought him little happiness. His wife, whom he had seen only intermittently during his years at sea, suffered from chronic health problems resulting from several difficult pregnancies. Despite his efforts, their marriage remained marked by distance and hardship.
Martyn was later appointed ambassador of the Westerlands to the Imperial capital of Fort Darion. In this role, he spent many years navigating the political landscape of Westeros, dealing regularly with the rulers of the various kingdoms and with the Emperor himself. His diplomatic career earned him a reputation as an experienced negotiator and a respected representative of his homeland.
Following the death of his first wife, Martyn became a familiar figure within the social circles of the capital. He attended noble gatherings, maintained extensive political connections, and was known to frequent some of the city's more discreet establishments. During this period, he formed a number of romantic attachments before marrying Bethany Farman, the daughter of his former mentor.
Although he developed genuine affection for Bethany, his responsibilities often kept him away from home. Their marriage was further complicated when Martyn discovered her infidelities and relationships with other women. Rather than ending the marriage, he chose to work toward reconciliation and preserving their life together.
After the death of Emperor Jaenar, Martyn decided to step down from his diplomatic position and pass his responsibilities to a younger ambassador. With the prospect of civil war looming over Westeros, he no longer sought influence or advancement. Instead, he hoped to return home, strengthen his marriage, build the family he and Bethany had long struggled to create, and address the challenges that had accumulated over the years.
Events, however, had other plans.
As tensions escalated across the realm, the sea—and the conflicts fought upon it—eventually called him back into service.
