Who? What? Huh? The story of Another Magazine’s headline for Wong Kar-Wai’s latest collaboration with Saint Laurent and my thoughts about it.
If you didn’t see it, the headline read: “Out now, the latest chapter of Saint Laurent’s SELF project sees Wong Kar-Wai draft in Hong Kong-based photographer Wing Shya to direct a new short film titled A Night in Shanghai NOVEMBER 25, 2019″. SELF, for those of you who are like me and weren’t aware, is a project that was started by Saint Laurent’s creative director Anthony Vaccarello with the aim of capturing the house through the eyes of world-renowned creatives. A great idea, most definitely, if you are a fashion brand that has been around for 58 years and counting!
However, it’s the Wong Kar-Wai ‘drafted in’ Hong Kong-based photographer Wing Shya to direct the short while he ‘curated’, part which raises questions and makes me think that this is some kind of mother f*n secret code for - he panned this project off to a friend because he was too busy or didn’t really want to do it. And that is totally fine except that it gives me the same feels of when it was announced that Tim Burton was remaking one of my favorite childhood films of all time - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory & Johnny Depp was cast as Willy Wonker. And we all remember how that went. #Sad face. #Meep. Granted, the soundtrack and the dreamy nature of the imagery that Kar-Wai is known for are present, so the ‘curated by’ part of the agreement was fulfilled. And maybe because he is my favorite film director of all time - I still wanted to stop everything I was doing after watching and purge on “Chungking Express” and “In the Mood for Love” one more time. But overall, this was a bit weird, I’m not going to lie, and I just had to share that with you.
