I just randomly thought about Belafu, his transformation and certain artistic symbolism in Made in Abyss.
Long time ago Belafu looked like a handsome young man with lovely crystal blue eyes.
He was easily one of the most inspiring MiA characters and his gorgeous appearance was a reflection of his kind heart.
But after he gave up on his ideals, his pride and life as human, he took the form of dreadful abyssal monster with empty eye sockets. Almost empty, his once beautuful eyes got replaced with creepy tentacles, which he uses to suck the blood and flesh of suffering mutated child.
What happened with Belafu made me think about Bondrewd and how differently he is drawn over the cour of story.
The first time part of his face was revealed, he looked like nightmare fuel. His crazy look was totally fitting for a mad scientist, who experiments on small children without single care.
However, he gets even more monstrous with each chapter (interesting enough, both Belafu and Bondrewd has something coming from from the eyes/eye sockets).
But when he is talking with Nanachi one last time, his eye is covered with text.
On the next page his speech bubbles aren’t pitch black anymore, but light grey.
And in the very end of Bondrewd’s arc, when things got complicated and he abandoned his previous aspiration, he changes his form again.
