Here are my silhouette designs for the characters. Usually, this technique is mainly used for concept design. However, I found this technique very helpful, and allow me to design more distinctive characters.

these are the scanned copies of my journal pages. (sorry about the bad handwriting).Â
I was initially gonna design for Oscar Wilde’s Salome. Salomè is one of the best work of aestheticism. Wilde’s use of language, symbolism, and depiction of appearances give the play a really attractive atmosphere. I felt because the language was so aesthetically pleasing, while I was reading it, many abstract visions, images appear in my mind. Thus, I tried to capture these abstract visions by using watercolor. And these sketches could be my inspiration for the stage design.
However, I was really struggling with making interesting designs for Salome, so I decided to leave it for a while.
I attempted to improve my ability to draw people, in preparation for doing costume design.Â
I found myself really fascinated by the style of art deco. Thus I decided to also make my design have this art deco style.Â
Here are my imitation drawings and studies. (some are from Picasso, George Barbier and unknown artists)

The Blue Bird
The Blue Bird is a very symbolic play. It basically tells a fantasy story of a pair of siblings’ journey in seeking for the bluebird and happiness. In the end, they learned that true happiness lies in simple things, particularly in the warmth of family love. (online script: https://www.gutenberg.org/files/8606/8606-h/8606-h.htm#link2H_4_0003)
The uniqueness of this play is that it the majority of the characters are personified concepts and creatures; Such as night, light, dog, sickness, and silence. Each character has it’s own personality and appearance. This allows me to expand my creative vision and test the limit of the personification of concepts. Moreover, settings of the scenes are also very distinctive, and each has different moods, and styles.
Stage Design Project Intro
This is an individual project I did for a course at school. Initially, I started with the idea of making a series of stage design for a certain play or book. After a long time of struggling and confusion, I finally decided to design for this play called L'Oiseau Bleu(The Blue Bird). I will use this Tumblr blog to share my works and journal my process. The deadline for this project is April 2018, so, hopefully  I will finish designing for all props, characters, and scene by then.
