🍷 (wine) Erk slowly approached the important looking figure, a glass of wine balanced in one hand, a glass of water gripped in the other. He had spotted them from across the way, and with instinct kicking in, immediately jumped to make good relations. He was not supposed to be any sort of official here, even if he was hardly one normally, but at the sight of political figures he couldn't help himself. Perhaps simply being bold would make up for it. "Milord, a drink for you."

Libra takes the wine with a smile (only slightly strained, good job), and sips at it. While normally loathe to partake, he finds that the happy and raucous atmosphere makes him feel more confident he can handle a glass or two. One drink won’t turn him into his father, and even if it did, there’s plenty of people here to stop him.

“Thank you,” he says kindly, turning a gentle smile Erk’s way. “This was very kind of you.” A pause, as he tried to think of a kingly, Chrom-y thing to say. “What’s your name?”

He nearly winces, that seemed like such a blunt manner to ask a question.

“Erk. It’s my pleasure.” He instinctively dipped in a bow, being careful not to spill his water. Immediately after, his mind swam with doubts. Was he being brash, or not forward enough? Was that the right thing to do? If he was to be the opposite, would that mean not being polite…? No, surely not. This was an official he was speaking to, after all. He deserved all the respect Erk could give.

“May I ask yours?” His heart leaped and he nearly kicked himself when he realized he forgot to address the man by his title. What was he, a heathen? It was too late to amend the sentence too… sweet Elimine, let his mistake go unnoticed.

“Right. My apologies…Eirika.” The lack of a title felt sour on his tongue. He tried not to frown. “Thank you for the compliment. I’m afraid the sword is only for show, I…don’t think I could use it if I tried.” He had indeed come under the guise of someone who taught use of swords, but truthfully, he didn’t even know how to properly hold one.

“I’m sure your swordplay is unrivaled, la–” he caught himself mid sentence, mentally berating himself for letting himself slip. “Eirika. But it is not where my specialty lies.” …Perhaps this would take some getting used to.

"This is supposed to mean something good, right?" Julius holds out a holly branch. "So... take it."

With a frown, Erk takes the branch. “Thank you. You’re very kind.” He turned the branch over in his hands, admiring the leaves. Quite honestly, he was unsure what to do with it. “I apologize, I have nothing to give you in return. Perhaps I could get you a drink?”

🌹 "...You are Princess Eirika of Renais, correct? I was sent here by my master on terms of research. ...I uh, was told you're a very beautiful lady, so I thought it only proper to bring you a flower..."

Eirika smiled and gently took the flower from the young man. “How genteel. Thank you for this, and know that our library is yours to use freely. What is your name?”

“Perfectly appropriate,” Eirika said warmly. She stood and went to see to it at once, bidding a servant to prepare a room before she sat across the table again.

“As I’ve said, the library is yours. The kitchens are open to you, too, if you tell them I sent you. And I shall find you a good horse to borrow, so that you can explore as far as you can in a single day.”

But it seemed a lonely four days, doing nothing but studying and riding alone. Erk had brought not only no friends, but no manservant, either.

“I take my tea every day around this time,” she offered then, even though in her experience, boys his age hardly cared for idle company. “You are welcome to join me again.”

“Thank you, Princess. You’ve been most hospitable to me.” With a smile he stood on uncertain legs, but bowed with a certainty that was well practiced. He doubted he’d spend much time in the kitchen, but the gesture was well appreciated.

“Thank you for the refreshments and conversation, it was very insightful. ...I should really be on my way to the library now, I have much to do.” He gave a polite smile, trying to look as poised as someone could after such a long journey. “Have a wonderful day, your highness. Thank you for the offer. I’ll see to make time to join you again.”

Eirika relaxed just a bit to see Erk eat an entire cake– but then she realized that his hair needed to be combed, and he had dust on the shoulder of his cloak that someone should brush off, and it would be good if he ate fruit as well as the cakes. Oh dear.

“How long would you like to stay?” she asked. “It would be a shame if you came all this way and did not get to spend any time in a kingdom you intended to study. We can have a room prepared at once, for however long you’d like.”

“Ah, you’re too kind…” He fidgeted, try not to look too grateful nor uncomfortable. He should be used to being in good hospitality– Lord Pent and Lady Louise certainly made sure he was well looked after, but in the end, it was still a strange sensation.

He spoke again after a moment of contemplation. “Does four days sound appropriate? To allow enough time to study, with perhaps a day to explore…?” He would of very much liked to see the larger scale damage first hand, but that would require a much more well thought out trip. For now, the local area would be enough. …Even if just for the scenery.

“I’d like to get to know you, since you’ve come all this way,” Eirika insisted. “I ask because you seem so young, yet. To think that this isn’t even your first such task…I suppose that explains how professional you are.”

It was endearing to see him acting like an old man when he couldn’t be a day over eighteen. But little things betrayed him: Eirika saw his eyes flicker to the platter and pushed it toward him. He certainly had the look of a scholar, as if he needed a good deal more food and sunshine.

“Please, eat to your heart’s content. I’ve already eaten so most of this is for you. Surely you are hungry, after such a journey?”

“Yes, I suppose you’re right…” Honestly, hunger was one of the things he did’t pay much attention to anymore. But giving it thought, he supposed he hadn’t eaten since he picked at his morning rations, and if this was really for him… Tentatively, he picked a small cake off the plate, eating in dainty bites. He finished with a smile.

“Thank you, you’ve been most hospitable to me. But I can hardly consider myself professional…I have much to learn.” He took a deep, contemplative breath before continuing, hands folded neatly, framed with a polite smile once more. “…Since you answered my questions, I suppose it’s only fair for me to answer any you may have.”

(Oh no, one would expect sand to get in boots–it was everywhere else.) He had started eating, bites here and there. Pent’s attention was held more by the conversation than the food, a habit that he never quite broke. At the other mage’s remark, he had to stop and laugh. “’Etruria is not so bad’, an endorsement of the highest order if I have ever heard one. Well, Louise and I are more than happy to have you here more often.”

He broke a small roll in half, still warm from the oven. Spread thin, butter melted easily on it. “To be honest, I have avoided the courts for some time now. Not that such a thing is unheard of given my attendance, but some… feathers have been stirred since my resignation as a General was finally acknowledged.”
