âA curse?â The newcomer responded with surprise, it was not a choice but a repetition of what was previously said. Could that kind of thing really be sold? The âevilâ triplet wish it wasnât one of those things like a possessed doll or something, that was really bad. This woman, Magda, was an interesting individual in Louieâs eyes. Why didnât his uncle talk about her? âThey can be a bit annoying, so something that surprises them?â A lie, he would never use anything to hurt Dewey and Huey physically or emotionally, but to get information one had to follow a role and watch the words. âThatâs not gonna be cheap, isnât it? How am I supposed to pay for a spell or a curse, ma'am?" The fingers tightened around the marble for strength, keeping his gaze so as not to waver.
Magda smiles slightly. âA curse, yes,â she says, eyes drifting to different herbs around her shop. Herbs and stones and powders and elixirs... âOften made with some simple consequences, I assure you. Iâm not the sort of witch,â she says, emphasizing the word, âwho would give out proper curses to just anyone.â She looks at him pointedly, as if scandalized at the thought. That her magic was simply sold at a market price.Â
Her eyes light up, and Magda claps her hands in a bit of delight. âOh, I see! Well, nothing too dangerous, Iâm assuming. A harmless prank, is it?â Of course she wouldnât give Louie anything too malicious. She wanted him to trust her. To allow her some confidence. âWhat about something simple, then?â He mentions payment, and Magda scoffs. âOh, please. Youâre young, arenât you. Save your money, dear. Iâll get you something small -- like a trial run, if you will. To see if you like magic -- yes? Now, what kind of simple, harmless spell would you like? Sibling squabbles can be quite interesting with a little... magic in the mix.â
