FINAL DESIGN PRESENTATION

I have intentionally used white space to allow for extra readability and to have space between text and images. It leads the reader from one element to the next with  fluidity. 

Shapes and Outlines

Shapes have helped me to organise, connect similar elements and content.

They created a sense of movement, provide depth or texture.

In my magazine, pictures contained in hexagonal shapes are related to local cuisine like Ethiopian Injera, coffee and spices.

Quote Inspiration for my design

Lastly I have decided to include a quote in my design inside the Ethiopian map to attract the interest of my readers and make the layout more appealing and engaging. I have used Lobster to make it stand out from the rest of the publication and text.

Quotes are an excellent way to emphasize content. They help readers scanning the documentation providing some focus points for an  important parts of our articles.

Cover and Rule of Thirds

I used the rule of thirds for the cover to quickly visualise the layout and relation between elements in the cover.

AIDA is a model used in marketing and visual communication, known as hierarchy of effects models or hierarchical models. It guides the customer/reader journey through Awareness, Interest, Desire and Action. 

Evolution of the Masthead

The evolutionary process design of the Masthead

I’m going to start my design by the masthead, creating a simple logo that gives the idea of the sun, a semicircle, similar to the Lonely Planet logo that promote a connection with travelling.

Research Style & Page Size

I’ve decided to set for A4 most standard and common travel magazine format.

I’ve also made some researches on best way to use bleed in order to have images to the edges as that’s what I aim to do.

Final Design Layout Sketch

Sketches of the layout are important to visualise where to place elements to have a balanced flow of text and images. The challenge was to combine and organise elements harmonically not to distract the reader and make the information easy to digest.

As this is a travel magazine with a culinary touch I’ve used the colours of the Ethiopian spices and reminiscent of dishes local people consume daily: the energetic orange of saffron, the joyful yellow of turmeric, injera and lentils, brown like cinnamon and coffee, green the colour of nature and fresh herbs. 

I’ve limited the numbers of colours to four for the headlines and strokes to create a stark contrast with the white background. The colour palette of the images also reflects the Ethiopian flag hues creating a sense of connection with the place.

The lively colours match the theme of the magazine and make the composition more visually appealing  for the reader. Furthermore they create relationships between all related element designs.

Now that I’ve set the font family for the masthead Balboa Font Family by Parkinson Type Design, it’s time to decide on the font for the articles.

After researching on different sources I decided to opt for Jubilat by Darden Studio. I plan to use Jubilat’s Bold Italic for the headlines on the magazine articles and Jubilat Book for the articles text.  I like the generous curves and efficient spacing which promote and enhance readability, allowing readers to easily move through the text on the page. The large lowercase and high contrast make it suitable for headlines and articles sidebars. It’s a whimsical typeface as the magazine itself that still maintains a practical sensibility.

As you can see below the hearty style is contrasted with the svelte Book weight demonstrating two of the tonalities that the slab-serif family can adopt. All smaller copy can be rendered in Open Sans.

Inspiration for my article introduction.

I came across this article about fonts for magazines and I found the image below inspiring to introduce my first article, the initial W letter, oversized and the rest of the article kept at normal size is an idea to use for my design layout.

Another inspiring oversized letter with an image contained within that I have used for my design.

Typeface for Masthead

Creative Market is a useful source along with Pinterest to browse across fonts and templates inspiration.

Atlas is designed after the font on travel and adventure maps. I’m looking for a similar font with thick lines. This one here has an hand-drawn style which give a more playful feel.

It was my starting point, I know I want a thick, strong character typeface for my masthead, that’s why I decided to look for a similar font Conde’ Nast Traveller used, which is a Dilemma Sans BOLD. The sans serif font has 42 styles, unfortunately it’s not free so I had to look for another similar typeface.

Virtuose Demi Bold is another nice sans serif Font. I finally set for Balboa Font Family by Parkinson  Type Design  because has a strong personality and has 11 typefaces that I can play with. I like the design combination of early sans serif  with contemporary touches. 

While I was looking for inspirations and researches on travel magazines format I came across this interesting article about 10 creative travel magazine templates.

Most of the templates are using A4 as page size and 3mm bleed all around which will be my final set for my publication.

The 3mm bleed will give the printer a small amount of space that will minimise the visibility of any trimming errors.

DESIGN LAYOUT A modern magazine that focuses on summer travel for a target audience ages 20-30. Another inspiring layout with a light and clean colour palette. I particularly like the hexagon graphic element that I have replicated in my design but altered alter alignment and positioning.

Trafalgar Insider uses a layout that captures the essence of four different destinations on a single spread. They have created individual sections to reflect each of the regions along with close-cropped artifacts to capture the essence of the culture. I like the use of the large graphical wavy element used to tie the sections together visually. The layout of the sections have inspired me for my articles layout.

Layout and Colours Research

Envato Elements is a good source if you’re looking for inspirations.

I came across this inspiring layout from TRAVEL with consistent blue and white colour palette that remind me of Greece and the Mediterrean.

The use of the same colour palette in the articles create consistency and connection with the place. Nice eye-catchy images
