Quarantine Craft
Yo, Iâm back⌠for the momentâŚ.
Iâve been working on one of these in non-quilted, classic black because Iâm boring, and am nearly done with it, now, but man that last eyehole finishing bit was hard to wrap my mind around. It all suddenly made sense when I was halfway through doing it wrong (hot tip: finish one of the eye circle things before you sew the other side, in case youâre like me). I think Iâm on the right track now⌠might have it done today or tomorrow, if I donât end up having to take an angle grinder to my sunglass lenses, which arenât quite the right shape.

Oh, and if youâre like me and donât have fusible interfacing/bias binding/batting, and canât find them because pandemic, you can still get by. I used the same material (a dress that was in my mending pile for so long I forgot I had it â I have like 6 black dresses anyway, NBD) as interfacing. I just cut it to the same seam allowance and carefully pinned to the outer layer before sewing. This did make it harder to do the topstitching neatly, thoughâŚ
I also made bias tape from the same dress (hopefully never doing that again). I had some felt which I used instead of batting, but only ended up using it for the eye circle donut bit. With two layers of fabric and top stitching, it actually holds its shape surprisingly well. Itâs not perfect, but I also havenât sewn anything in years, so Iâm pretty happy with it.
Almost done! Just gotta finish the other eye and Iâll be ready to creep out the neighbors.Â
