In these States United there are more iPhones than people (estimated sales figures of over 500 million units since release), and on average, more than 15% of them end up in the toilet, aka, this country's proud citizens have dumped well over seven million iPhones literally in the toilet.
Assuming they're all beat up old iPhones worth only $150, that's still over a billion dollars of iPhones.
Personally, I have a shitty $40 phone, and I've never broken so much as a charger in almost a year of continuous use. I bought it used, got an extended battery, and it's served me flawlessly minus some outdated software that I can deal with.
Let's presume we take a billion dollars and address some concerns, like police officers not having cameras. A billion dollars is enough to buy every single police officer in the United States FOUR brand-new GoPro Hero-3 cameras.
Perhaps we'd like to address some other problem, like the environment? A billion dollars of subsidies would, likely, get a lot of train lines back on their feet, a form of transit that can get many hundreds of miles per gallon per person while offering utmost comfort and negligible safety concerns (save lives too, 80 people a day on average die in automotive accidents).
Alternately, if you filthy Americans refuse to give up having YOUR OWN car that you WON'T share (grow up), you could spend it on handing out, for free, 65,000 brand-new Mitsubishi Mirages to replace your gas guzzler, which can achieve 44mpg on an open highway, almost double the fuel economy of an average American car. At an average driving mileage of 10,000 miles per year, and presuming an upgrade from a car that gets 22mpg, that's a saving of twenty-five MILLION gallons of gasoline per year, worth sixty-two million dollars and two-hundred and twenty thousand TONS of co2.
This is why I can't sleep at night.
