아름다움

바다를 액자에 건다. 바다에 가라앉는 나를 본 적이 있다. 팔다리가 부식되어 산호가 되어갔다. 허옇게 변한 사지가 산호들 사이에 갇혀 있었다. 노랗거나 파란 물고기들이 주변을 배회했다. 저기 열대어가 있어. 스킨다이버들이 내 쪽을 가리키며 말했다. 젖은 빵을 찢어 던졌다. 아름답다는 말을 산호숲에 남겨두고 스킨다이버들은 뭍으로 돌아갔다. 나를 그곳에 둔 채 나도 꿈에서 빠져나왔다. 이곳을 떠나본 자들은 지구가 아름다운 별이라 말했다지만 이곳에서만 살아본 나는 지옥이 여기라는 걸 증명하고 싶다. 나를 여기에 둔 채 나는 저곳으로 다시 빠져나가서 정육점과 세탁소 사이에 임대문의 종이를 쳐다보고 서 있다. 텅 빈 상가 속에서 마리아가 혼자 퀼트 천을 깁고 있다. 이 액자를 다시 바다에 건다.

Beauty

I hang the ocean on a picture frame.

I have seen myself sink into the ocean. My limbs corroded and became coral.

My limbs, bleached white, were imprisoned between the corals. Fishes that were yellow or blue wandered nearby.

There’s a tropical fish. Free divers pointed towards my direction and said. They tore bits of wet bread and threw it. After leaving the word beautiful in the coral forest the free divers went back to land.

I too, having left myself there, exited the dream.

Those who have tried leaving here say that Earth is a beautiful planet but I, who has only ever lived here, want to prove that hell is here, nowhere else.

Having left myself here, I left to go there once more

I stand, staring at the open lease sign between the butcher shop and the laundromat. In the middle of an empty store, Maria stands alone mending a patch of quilt .

I hang this picture frame once more on the ocean.
