Nidalee Kit Breakdown: The Teeth
3D Printing (forgot to take photos of this part - oops)
The master was 3D printed at .2 layer height on a CR10S with PLA+. After sanding and and spraying with filler primer, it was ready for molding.
I made a two part mold using Mold Star 30 and sulfate-free clay. Once the first half was done curing, the mold was flipped over, had the clay removed, added mold release and then was able to pour the second half of the silicone.
Once both halves of the mold were fully cured and ready to use, I used an Xacto knife to create a pour spout. This is where the resin is poured.
Because my client was going to be wearing 8 of the 12 teeth on her hips as a belt, keeping the weight down was of utmost importance. Luckily, there is FeatherLite, a lightweight resin that’s pourable and workable like any other hard resin. Weight differences between Featherlite (80g / 2.2oz) and SmoothCast 300 (120g / 4.2oz). These casts were made with the exact same mold. It may not seem like much, but there are 12 in total so the weight really adds up! The client only has to lug around .9 kilos (1.9lbs) versus 1.4 kilos (3lbs)
Once all 12 teeth were cast, there was the usual cleanup job like removing the pour spout, sanding the seams, and filling in any imperfections and gaps. After that, it was time for the best part!
Here is a quick overview of my painting process of the teeth. I used Createx and Golden acrylics using an Iwata airbrush.
Spray primer > Base coat (white) > Base coat (yellow) > Orange-ish midtones > Darker shading > Clear coat x3
After that all the client has to do is attach them to her cosplay!
