“I have been meditating on the very great pleasure which a pair of fine eyes in the face of a pretty woman can bestow,” Draco read aloud. So absorbed was he in the passage that he failed to notice the small, knowing smirk tugging at Hermione’s lips as she watched his face in the low light.
“This Mr Darcy sounds insufferable,” Draco snorted, glancing down at her at last. “What?”
She shrugged, settling more comfortably against his chest. “Does he not remind you of anyone?”
“No,” he replied coolly. “Should he?”
“Oh, come on, Draco,” Hermione said, giving his arm a light tap. “Brooding, insufferable, spectacularly blind to his own feelings—shall I go on?”
There was a pause. Then, very slowly, Draco raised an eyebrow.
“I see,” he said. “And I presume we are both acquainted with the clever, exasperatingly perceptive heroine?”
“That’s not what I meant,” she protested, though she did not move away. “But you’re not entirely wrong.”
Their eyes met, and for a moment neither spoke, before they both gave in to quiet laughter.
Draco’s fingers, cool against her skin, lifted to her cheek, his thumb brushing her lower lip before he leaned down to kiss her.
“You know,” he murmured afterwards, “these Muggle books are not entirely rubbish. Fine eyes, in the face of a pretty woman, can indeed bestow.”
