Hey! It’s so awesome that you want a bit of a challenge, it is not arrogant at all, it just shows that you want to refine and improve as a player. Please don’t be worried about what your leader may think, everyone here is super chill and supportive. That being said, ensemble placements are generally based on playing ability, with older year 12 students given priority. There is always the opportunity for every student to advance into higher level ensembles, so keep practicing and taking initiative in rehearsals. You can also speak to your instrumental teacher or ensemble leader if you feel that you want to advance, we always want our musos to be placed in an ensemble suited to them.

Hi there!! Yay we absolutely love new people, so glad that you’ve decided to join our family. Not to worry, it might just be a mix up with compass or that the teacher just hasn’t gotten around to scheduling it. If you still have any concerns, either email Mr Chua ([email protected]) or Ms Lin ([email protected]) for confirmation. Or you could head into their office any time you’re not on camp (I’m assuming you’re in yr 9??). Hey! Core ensembles and lessons will be starting next week (Week 2). Please check your compass or speak to your teacher in regards to specific ensembles that you are involved in. Orchestra will commence on the 27th of February:))

Hiii im in year 9 this year and i am currently learning grade 8 flute. I would like to be part of the different orchestras offered at macrob (including the musical orchestra) however im not sure if ill be able to get in. Many have told me that i can get in when considering the level I am at except I know from experience that orchestras dont need many flute players and im worried that the seniors will be given a higher priority and i really really want to be in orchestras and ensembles because music is my passion :)))

Hey there! 

 So there isn't a set grade to get into orchestra as it varies from instrument to instrument depending on the number of students playing the instrument and the requirement of that instrument in the orchestra. For example, while most beginner double basses and brass students will be accepted into the orchestra, more common instruments such as the violin or flute will require a higher level of ability (approx. grade 5 is the standard). However it is also based on your actual ability to play and not just grade level. With this said, for all students regardless of instrument, you must audition in the first few weeks of term to get into orch. 

 Teachers will also be more likely to consider you for future places and opportunities such Speech Night Orchestra if you make yourself known and demonstrate commitment to core ensembles and lessons, as well as playing ability throughout the year.

Hi! I’ll pass your question onto the drama captains as they’ll have more concrete information, but I can add in some personal experience.

This year you’re allowed to sing any song of your choosing, which is good! You’ll enter the room they’ll allow you to get comfortable and you’ll sing ( bring music for the accompanist! )

They then might ask you to do the acting round, in which case they’ll most likely give you a script and do a short reading where you get the opportunity to show your acting skills. That doesn’t mean DON’T perform whilst you sing however, you need to be animated and engaged whilst you sing to get to the acting round.

After that you’ll also have to do a dance audition, which is always very simple to pick up.

In terms of when, sign ups are outside the theatre! You pick a date and time and then you’re all set :))

Hey there! You will be allocated to level appropriate ensembles by your teacher. As symphony is the core ensemble for wind students, it means that’s the first ensemble students are allocated to. Orch is an auditioned group of those from core ensemble.

Hey! That is correct, you have the option to pay the ensemble fee only and only participate in ensemble or you can do lessons + ensemble, which will include the cost of lessons as well as ensemble joining fee.

OH Did you mean like on the day itself? Sorry I thought you were talking about Friday 16th and Monday 19th my bad. At the current moment it is EVERYONE (students and musicians) wearing uniform ( summer or winter on the day) and winter at night.

This year, the orch and sympho leaders will just be ensemble leaders. The way that we choose all ensemble leaders is by consulting the teacher(s) for that ensemble, and seeing if there is anyone that they think is suitable for the role. If you are interested in being an ensemble leader, we recommend that you let your teacher know, so that they take you into consideration.
