La narrativa fundacional de los primeros pobladores de América se está reescribiendo con letras de piedra. Un análisis tecnológico exhaustivo de herramientas líticas, cuyos resultados se publican en la revista Science Advances, aporta la evidencia más sólida hasta la fecha a favor de la teoría de que grupos humanos del Pleistoceno tardío emplearon una ruta costera a lo largo del Pacífico, desde el este de Asia, para adentrarse en el continente americano. La investigación, dirigida por el antropólogo Loren Davis de la Universidad Estatal de Oregón, demuestra que estos pioneros no fueron una anomalía aislada, sino parte integral de un mundo paleolítico global interconectado. Por un lado, la teoría tradicional postula un cruce a través del puente terrestre de Beringia hace aproximadamente 13.000 años, coincidiendo con el retroceso de la última glaciación. Frente a esta, la hipótesis costera propone una migración significativamente más antigua, hace alrededor de 20.000 años.

Las herramientas líticas más antiguas analizadas por Davis y su equipo son notablemente más pequeñas, ligeras y fueron fabricadas mediante métodos radicalmente diferentes a las tecnologías posteriores asociadas a los Paleoindios.
