Chapter 1: Mother's Absence
Stella stellina
It had been years since Angel had seen his father, and unexpectedly to him, Henroin sent an invitation, inviting Angel to a Father’s Day party, as crazy as that sounds. He had never had a great relationship with his father after his mother disappeared. He almost decided not to go until he learned that Molly would also be in attendance. He could probably deal with his father’s shit if Molly was by his side; besides, he hasn’t gotten to see her since his overdose in the thirties.
“I can’t believe I’m fucking doing this…” Angel muttered while standing outside the house for his so-called father. As Angel’s boots hit the inside of the house with a clack, he’s greeted with stares. “
“Some warm welcome, huh?” Though Angel didn’t expect anything less. A few aunts, cousins, and uncles were present as well as his self-proclaimed father himself, talking up a storm.
“Jeezus…” Angel groaned under his breath.
As Angel maneuvered and squeezed between family while trying to avoid as much interaction as possible, he made his way upstairs to the bathroom to avoid the suffocation of stares and halfhearted comments about his “lifestyle.”
While peeking through the rooms that lined the halls, he crept into the room he once called his own when he was previously working with his father in the mob. It looked untouched mostly, besides the few bullet holes in the wall. His father probably refused to touch it. Didn’t want his “gay disease”, as he’d call it.
Angel’s heels clicked against the step as he rose up the stairs. The tip of Angel’s toes crept into one of the spare rooms in his father’s home, soon greeted by another spider. His sister, Molly. Angel felt his heart jump for joy. His family was here.
“Molls'?” Angel asked softly as he walked into the room.
Molly jumped at the sudden voice and kept up to hug her brother. “It’s been so long, Angie. I’ve missed you, you know. You don’t call and—“ Molly immediately hugs her brother tightly before picking him up and spinning him around.
“Slow down, Molls.” Angel chuckles, hugging his sister back while adjusting to her tight grip. “You’re gonna squeeze the stuffing right out of me. I’ve missed ya too. Just…been busy is all.”
“Sure, always too busy to call, huh?” Molly rolled her eyes playfully while patting a spot on Angel’s old bed, urging him to sit.
“Have you seen Salvat- Niss? Have you seen Niss yet?” Asked Angel, with a hint of nervousness in his voice. The two had always butted heads. Sometimes Angel was too hardheaded and Arackniss was too coarse. They’ve had their ups and downs, with more emphasis on downs, but deep down he loves his brother, though he’d never say it to his stupid face.
Molly giggled before hopping off the bed. “He’s somewhere around here. Probably helping to set up the table.” She stretches before flicking Angel on the forehead, for which he responds with a small ouch and a chuckle.
“Have you seen our old man yet? Didn’t spot em when I walked in. He was prolly yelling at tha boys.” Molly twirls a lock of her hair around her finger.
“Briefly and that was enough for me,” Angel sighed, rubbing the back of his neck with his upper hand while his lower hands fiddle with the hem of his black dress. “More like he saw me and immediately started whispering to Uncle Tony. Didn’t even say a word ta me. Just gave me the stink eye like usual. The old man was down there bragging ta the uncles like he’s some kind of saint. I swear, if he makes one more comment about my ‘lifestyle,’ I’m going to put another bullet hole in these walls.”
"Oh, ignore him," Molly scoffed, "He’s just an old grouch who doesn't know how to handle anything he can't control. I only came because I knew you'd be miserable alone, but I’m really glad you came anyway.”
“Well, Let’s get this over with.” Angel says as him and Molly get up. The twins go back downstairs to the living then to the dining room. The table was set, the chairs filled with relatives, and chatter was filling the air. There were three seats saved at the end of the table. One for Molly. One for Angel. One for Niss. Molly and Angel take their seats. Angel sighs and fiddles with his finger a bit before Molly takes his hands and squeezes for Angel’s reassurance.
“You’ll be okay.” She mouthed which was enough to make Angel’s nerves relax.
The clanking of a spoon against glass disrupts the chatter of the family as Henroin takes his seat at the head of the table. Shaken sighs make it out of the twins’s mouthes.
“Welcome friends and family. Thank you for coming to celebrate this day with me.” Their father states. “I feel honored to call myself a father and grateful to spend this time with my children—“ As Henroin goes on with his speech Niss makes his way to the table and sits in the middle of Molly and Angel. The twins can’t help but look at him. He looks ticked but not his normal amount of ticked. There’s bags under his eyes, he’s fidgeting, and there’s a hint of tear marks on Niss’s collarbone.
“Niss are you-“ Angel asked before being interrupted by his father and the sound of their family talking.
“I wouldn’t be a father without these three rascals; Molly, Salvatore, and Anthony.” A hefty chuckle erupts from their father as the eyes of their family members stare at them with small laughs coming from them. This made Molly and Angel uneasy but they were good at hiding it. Soon after Henronin’s speech, Nona Lona brought out the food, arranging it onto the table in her meticulous way.
The table was full of laughter and chatter from their family but not the children. They were almost silent besides Molly saying a few words. Arackniss stared at his food, untouched as it was; because of this Angel couldn’t help but stare at him. He was being odd. Odder than usual.
“Niss, are you okay?” Angel asked, gathering Molly’s attention.
“You aren’t usually this quiet.” Molly Added.
Niss didn’t say anything. Instead, he started out his food and clawed at the cushion of his chair. Henronin somehow always kept the façade of being a good father, some good father he was. Good fathers didn’t hurt their children. Good fathers didn’t reprimand their children for who they were. Good fathers didn’t-
“Niss!” Angel says in a loud whisper, snapping Niss out of his trance. A small groan comes out of Arackniss’s mouth. It was more annoyed at being at this get together rather than at Angel.
“What?” Niss asked gruffly. “Why are you yelling my ear off?! Shaddup and eat.
“You’re off.” The twins say.
“I’m fine.” Niss states before digging his fork into his food.
Niss drifted off into his mind as the sounds of plates, forks, and spoons clinking sound farther away and the sounds of his sibling trying to get his attention mottled his ears like water. He didn’t wanna be here. He didn’t wanna talk to anyone. He was tired. He felt as if he reached the end of his string. The sound of his sibling’s frantic whispers bring him back to reality. He hears the praise and whispers from his family members; cousins, uncles, aunts.
“You’re such a great father”
“So kind.”
“So intelligent.”
“So nurturing.”
Nurturing?
The words went through Niss’s ears and echoed through his brain over and over and over again.
Good father? He wasn't a good father, more or less even a viable sperm donor. Fathers raised their kids, Fathers talked to their children, Fathers didn’t hate their children did they?
Before realizing it Niss had said it out loud for everyone to hear.
“You think he’s nurturing?” Asked the older brother. Niss’s fists balled up. He felt nails digging into the skin of his hands, creating soon to be scabs. He couldn’t help himself from feeling he couldn’t help himself from caring. He spent so long, not caring and pushing things down cause that’s what men did to protect their families. Men aren’t emotional because it was his job.
The twins stare at each other in place, their hands on Niss’s shoulders. Which in their way was Molly and Angel telling him to relax; this was a public event. They didn’t want any issues with their father right now. They just wanted to have dinner and leave to get this over with. They weren’t expecting this kind of behavior from their older brother towards their father.
“Is there something you want to say Niss? Speak up.” Henronin demands. Niss could feel the venom spitting out of his father‘s mouth even if it wasn’t a literal it was there. The room got quiet with a few murmurs to be heard as well as whispered pleads from the twins for Niss to calm down.
“You call making me take care of the twins being nurturing?” Niss asks. “I took care of them after Ma “left.” You were screwing around with whores and running shipments while I was cleaning up their scraped knees and feeding them!” Arackniss spat, the words tearing out of his throat like rapid fire.
The entire dining room went dead silent. The clinking of silverware stopped completely. Dozens of the invited mobsters, aunts, and cousins froze in place, their eyes darting rapidly between Arackniss and their father sitting at the head of the table.
The rage in Niss fuels as he watches their father grow angry. Yeah, get mad. Yell at me. Hit me like you always did. “I know you. You’re the reason mom—“
Molly’s fingers dug tighter into Arackniss’s shoulder, her face turning pale. Angel’s breath hitched in fear, their father looking at them like a target on a bullseye. He tried to pull his older brother back by the arm, whispering a frantic, “Niss, shut the fuck up, don’t do this here—”
But Niss couldn’t stop. He wouldn’t. The many years of repressed anger and being the invisible parent to his siblings. The person who sacrificed his own childhood to raise the twins while Henroin played the ruthless boss, came flooding to the surface like a flood.
Henroin didn’t flinch. He slowly set his wine glass down on the white tablecloth, the glass making a sharp clink against the porcelain plate. His extra sets of arms crossed over his chest, his eyes narrowing into slits as he glared down at his eldest son. The aura of authority he held over the family was suffocating.
“You think you’re a man because you whimper and moan about what happened in the past, Arackniss?” Henroin’s voice was dangerously low, vibrating through the quiet room. “I provided for this family. I put the food on the table you ate, and the clothes on your backs. You did what was expected of an eldest son. Nothing more.”
“You weren’t a father!” Arackniss took a step forward, shaking off the twins' hands. His voice cracked with a lifetime of exhaustion. “You were a doner. You were luck enough Ma let you fuck her—“
Before Henroin could even open his mouth, Angel and Molly moved as a unit, dragging their brother out the room. They didn’t need to exchange a look. They didn’t have to; a lifetime of surviving under the same roof and the twins knew what was coming next.
"That's it, we're leaving," Angel said, his voice dropping its usual sarcasm.
The cool outside air hit their faces as the twins practically threw Arackniss down the front steps of the estate. The heavy door of the house slammed shut behind them.
Arackniss stumbled onto the gravel driveway, catching himself on his hands, scraping his hands a bit. He was chest-heaving, his knuckles bleeding slightly from how hard he had been clenching his fists. He looked up at his younger siblings, his eyes furious. "Why the hell did you stop me?! You protectin’ im now?!”
"Are you fucking kidding me?!" Arackniss slapped Angel’s hands away instead of taking them. He scrambled back to his boots on his own, his face contorted in a mix of fury, bitterness, and anger. "You think I'm weak? You think I need you two lecturing me on how to survive our own goddamn father?!"
"Niss, we're just trying to help you. You know what dad’s like—" Molly stated, stepping forward with her hands raised.
"Don't give me that bullshit, Molly!" Niss spat as he turned to face her. "You two got out! You got to leave, you got to live your own lives, while I stayed here and swallowed his shit every single day! Don't you dare come back here for one afternoon and act like you know what the fuck I've been dealing with! ME.”
He glared at Angel, his chest heaving. "And you! The hotel? You want me to go hide in some pathetic, cum struck, rainbow colored safe house for fuck ups like you, huh? like a coward? Fuck you, Tony! Fuck both of you!"
"Fine! Stay here and get your fuckin' brains blown out over a fuckin' dinner, see if I fuckin’ care!" Angel yelled back, his own temper getting the better of him.
But Arackniss wasn't listening anymore. He wouldn’t. Shaking with a volatile mix of adrenaline and raw humiliation. He stormed around the side of the home, his heavy boots crunching violently against the gravel as he headed toward the dark back of the house. He needed to get away from the party, away from his siblings, and away from the suffocating judgment of the dining room. Everyone.
He found the back service door, kicking it open with and slipped into the dim, quiet corridors of the house. Avoiding the kitchen and the main stairwell where the noise of the family dinner was still in full swing. He knew every blind spot in this house in that godforsaken house.
Niss threw the heavy oak door open of one of the many fandom rooms, stepped inside, and slammed it shut behind him, locking it with a sharp click.
Arackniss rubs his temple, the heavy fabric of his dark suit sleeves shifted down his arms, exposing the cuts beneath his sleeves. He breathes in and out. In and out over and over again. His mind keeps saying it’s okay, you’re fine, but he isn’t fine. He didn’t feel fine.
He should be used to this now shouldn't he? Him and dad fight, he gets beat, they makeup, and they go about their day. It's been a repeated cycle since he and the twins have been kids. Ma always told Niss to take care of his siblings, kiss their booboos, give them advice and lessons, and protect them. That’s what he did. The day his mother died is the day he took that vow to the grave.
“You’re the reason mom died.” That man killed her in cold blood and masked it as an accident.
It made Arackniss sick seeing his grandmother; her mother hugging and kissing his father, saying he's,"A good man.” Hugging the same man that put a gun down her daughter’s throat, releasing the chamber then went searching for his next fuck. He’s a coward, a snake, a liar.
Salvatore wasn't supposed to see her death. He walked into his father’s office only to say goodnight to his mom with a kiss and walked into an assault, but what could a nine year old do? His father made him watch with his lackeys. His eyes forced open to watch as the bullet ruptured the very life out of his mother. He kept his mouth shut not out of respect but out of fear, pure fear for his father. Something his siblings don't think he has. He loves his family, He loves Anthony and Melissa. He loves them enough to keep them safe even if it means keeping them away from him.
Niss lets out a shaken sigh and tubs his temple, his sleeves shift down to his forearm revealing healed scars on his arm. He didn't know any other way to relieve his pain. Scars worthy from a first born son. He had kept the secrets. He had let Anthony and Molly hate the family and run away, because running away meant they were safe from the monster in the dining room.
A soft, hesitant knock rattled at the locked door, breaking the silence.
"Niss?"
It wasn't Angel's loud, demanding voice. It was Molly. Her voice was muffled through the thick wood, trembling and stripped of the defensive anger from the driveway.
"Niss, please open the door," she pleaded softly. "Anthony is just…upset. You know how you two get. He didn't mean what he said.”
"Just leave, Molly," Arackniss lets out a sigh and puts his hand on the door. "You got out. Stay out."
Molly sighs, sliding down the door before sitting. The silence between them is prolonged, and Niss thinks that she's given up. He closed his eyes, leaning his head back against the hardwood, waiting for the sound of her footsteps to fade down the hallway.
Instead, there was an aggressive thud against the door. "Get away from the door, Molly," Angel’s voice barked from the corridor. It was stripped of all the screaming from the driveway and instead replaced by panic, not malice.
"Anthony, don't do this! He's already upset! You're just gonna—"
"I said move!" Angel's boot slams against the door lock, breaking it, causing Niss to back away. The brass latch gives way, and the door springs open with a bang.
Before Angel gets a chance to start another argument, His eyes drop down to the pale lines cutting across the skin. some fresh and others old. "Niss..." Angel whispered, stepping into the room. He reached a hand out, his fingers twitching. "What the fuck is that?"
“Don’t fuckin’ touch me angel youve done enough.” Niss snatches his forearm away from Angel and says, “Why did you guys even come? Thought you were busy with your hotel.”
“Charlie’s hotel,” Angel corrects before grabbing Niss’s arm. “Molls go get some bandages. Dad keeps ‘em under the bathroom cabinet.” As Molly goes to the bathroom to retrieve the supplies Angel examines his brother's arm. “Are you digging for gold in there? Jeezus, Sal.”
“Don’t patronize me.”
“I’m not. I’m…worried, weird enough. You’ve never acted like that.” Angel didn't let go of his arm. His grip was not tight enough to hurt, but it was firm.
"I've always acted like this," Arackniss muttered, "You just never stayed around long enough to notice. You were always off with that Sicilian boy.”
Angel chuckles and says, “I can't lie. He was cute but it’s hard to stay around a place where everyone's trying to cut each other's throats and fight. But I didn't think... I didn't think you were doing it to yourself, Niss."
Molly hurries back with the supplies, holding a white first-aid box she took from beneath the bathroom cabinet. She quietly dropped to her knees beside Angel and took the bandages out of the box. She pulled out a roll of clean white gauze and an antiseptic bottle. She looked up at Arackniss, “Just..let us help, okay?”
Arackniss looks at his siblings and sighs. "You're both idiots," Arackniss whispered, his eyes closing as the sting of the medicine hit his skin. "You shouldn't have come back here. Not for dinner. Not for me."
"Shut up and let us be idiots, then," Angel murmured, taking the gauze from Molly to start wrapping Arackniss’s forearm. The three itsy spiders sit in the room silently. Molly wraps some gauze around his last scar on his arm and kisses it just like mom used to do to her. Angel wasn't someone who enjoyed the silence. He always needed noise, probably why the allure of glitz, glamor, and Val were so intriguing to him.
Niss grabs a cig from his pocket and lights it before muttering out a thanks. Angel, Molly, and Niss all huddle onto the floor. It’s too quiet. Angel groans and just lets it rip, “Why are ya doing that to yourself, Niss? I don’t understand. You’re always so..uptight and–”
“It’s not like I enjoy doing the shit dad has me do, Angel.” Niss’s words hang in the air. “I just..i do it to– I feel bad..”
Not enjoying it? This confused the twins. Niss had always been their fathers perfect little soldier and the family favorite with Molly. He wasnt a fuck up like Angel. He was an example to other families in the Mafia.
“So why stay here then?” Molly asks. “You can stay with me or with Angel at the hotel. They have open rooms–” The sister takes Niss’s hand, rubbing his knuckles.
The oldest looks at both of his siblings. He’s never seen them so concerned. It was usually a face of annoyance. “I feel like this is what I deserve. I should've been able to help her but I couldn’t.” Arackniss swallows and pats Molly’s hand. “I–”
“You're punishing yourself…?" Angel finishes the sentence, solemly. “Youre punishing yourself for something you don't even do, Niss.”
Angel chuckles and stands up, his black pumps click clacking against the wooden floors as he paces. “Ma died in a shootout, Niss. We were kids. There was no way you were going to be able to help her–”
“No she didn't.”
The twins pause and Molly laughs nervously. “Whaddaya mean? Pops said that the Aliotti family’s goons broke in one night.” Angel chuckles before rubbing his temple, sliding down the wall to sit again. “You keep saying this shit. I don't understand. Pops wouldn't lie about that he loved Ma, Niss. You know that. Christmas day, 1924–”
Nis continues and plays with his fingers nervously. “At ten o'clock when Ma had put you two to bed she told me to get ready for bed and I did. She usually came to kiss me goodnight but she didn't come so I went to tell her goodnight.”
The room goes quiet again before Angel protests, “Molly, are you seriously listening to this shit?!” Molly looks at her other brother and he looks weirdly terrified. She feels her heart drop. Niss might be a pain in the ass but he never lied.
“Molls!-–”
“Shuddap Tony.” Molly says bluntly before looking at Niss. “Keep talking.”
Niss looks up at the twins, Molly is listening intently and Angel is tapping his heels against the wood. He’s skeptical. The oldest swallows before continuing. “I went down the hall and I heard mommy yelling. I didn't know what for but she sounded terrified. I went in and dad had a gun down her throat.”
Molly gags. “Jesus Christ."
“You’re seriously believing him, Molly,” Angel chuckles. He's trying to persuade his sister but even he wants to stop the tears from coming out his eyes. He lets out a wet laugh. “This isn't funny Niss. You're a liar. Bugiardo!”
“Why are you so hesitant? Is it hard to believe that dad was violent?! He threw you out at eighteen Angel and he–”
Angel couldn’t help it. The tears started to slow, he started to shake and shiver before letting out a cry. “I’m sorry that I want to believe that our dad loved mom, okay? He doesnt like me or..or us but I want to believe he loves mommy, okay? I want to think that he loved her and it was an accident but I know it’s not and I feel bad..” He sniffles and wipes away his ruined mascara before sitting back down.
“What did we do that was so wrong for him to take her from us..?” Angel can barely keep his eyes open because of the overflowing tears streaming down his face. You can lie and lie to yourself no matter how much you want to. Angel’s been lying to himself for a long time. Her death was out of the blue and it felt suspicious even for a seven year old but he didn't want to believe it but looming truth followed him every time he thought of her.
Niss hated seeing them cry. He sighs and walks over to Angel while holding Molly,s hand. He takes his shirt and wipes Angel’s eyes as Molly kisses her twin’s cheek. Niss uses that soothing voice their mother used when they were upset. “Listen, I get it. I do and I’m sorry, okay.” Hiccups angel’s cheek where angel leans into his hand and sighs. Niss pulls the twins into his chest, cradling them.
He whispers a lullaby mom used to sing to them in Italian as he rubs their backs.
Stella stellina
La notte s'avvicina
La fiamma traballa
La mucca è nella stalla
Niss leans into their hair and breathes them in. It’s been a while since they hugged like this. The last time they had this chance was when Angel left. After a few, the twins start to sing along as they hold each other tightly as if they’ll disappear.
La mucca e il vitello
La pecora e l'agnello
La chioccia e il pulcino
Ognuno ha il suo bambino
E tutti fan la nanna sul cuore della mamma.
‘Niss?” Molly asks, looking up at her brother.
“Yeah..?”
“Just talk to us, okay? No more secrets.
Niss snuggles into their hair, “I’m trying to, Molls. I’m trying.
The three spiders sit on the floor as the oldest holds them close through the whimpering, crying, and sniffles all while their family members are chatting downstairs in the dining room. Niss’s hands comb through the twin spider’s hair as he continues singing the lullaby over and over again as they slowly start to relax through the hecticness.
E tutti fan la nanna sul cuore della mamma.
Everyone sleeps on their mother's heart.
Stella stellina La notte s'avvicina La fiamma traballa La mucca è nella stalla La mucca e il vitello La pecora e l'agnello La chioccia e il pulcino Ognuno ha il suo bambino E tutti fan la nanna sul cuore della mamma.
Star, little star The night is approaching The flame flickers The cow is in the barn The cow and the calf The sheep and the lamb The hen and the chick Everyone has their own child Everyone sleeps on their mother's heart.
