This scene. It’s a devastating and precious glimpse into the vulnerability of Lestat and how much he aches and longs for Louis’ love. It’s a plea, a “see me” moment. It’s just the two of them and Lestat is not performing just as he didn’t perform in the church. The pain is there, the honest imploring for Louis not to follow through with the plan. It broke me when I first saw it, to see his emotion so intense and bare, knowing that he was going to let Louise make his choice. He loves him, adores him and still has hope. Ahhh, it hurts.

This short monologue from Lestat about thinking of a quiet peaceful escape from the chaos of current circumstances and memory, exploring the beautiful natural side of the ‘savage garden’ is a scene that I find really special out of the series so far. His demeanor throughout and a trueness of what lies beneath a surface that not many care to find shines a lovely light on even more genuine desires of his. Louis definitely helps provide the light in their newer time together. The glimmer seen here becomes stronger in Lestat. His readiness to live in an even broader sense than we’ve seen as an audience never strays from the authenticity of his character and it’s remarkable. Lestat as a being and the way Sam Reid personifies him is so rare because Lestat is never hiding, he’s never really trying to convince anyone to think of him in one certain way. He may not say everything that he feels, wants, or remembers all of the time, but I don’t believe anyone does truly, not even the most honest or innocent. That doesn’t mean that those things carry shame. If someone were to look at Lestat and somehow read something about him unspoken, he wouldn’t try to lie his way out of it even he didn’t process the gravity of his true feelings and how it affected him. It’s like his answer to Daniel in this scene. What is he going to do now? Lestat is honest on what he imagines he’d enjoy doing, he thought of it and he spoke it regardless of what anyone would have wanted him to say or expected him to say. It wasn’t rehearsed or carried the hardcore intensity of a rock star. It was simple honesty, he’d truly enjoy it, but the weight of it was deeper with heavy meanings and reasons tied to it even if he was not considering them right then. I also find the dreams and his description to be so sweet.

This experience that we all get to share in and see is once in a lifetime. I’ll never not appreciate that and I will never be embarrassed that a favored book and television character portrayed by an actor with astounding skill taught me lessons that I needed to learn in addition to real life events and people. Those we respect and love can teach us the most as much as they can make us laugh and cry and loosen up.
