女书 [nǚshū] a special writing system used by some women in Jiangyong County and neighbouring areas, Hunan Province. Currently, there are about 600 basic characters. This script has been included in the list of national intangible cultural heritage of China.

According to one version, it is assumed that «women’s writing» emerged during the Ming and Qing periods.

There are various legends about how this writing appeared. However, the main reason can be said to be that little attention was paid to women's education. Men, generally, viewed nushu as simple decorative patterns and ignored it.

Nushu is passed down naturally from mother to daughter and from elder to younger, from generation to generation.
