Sonia Rescalvo was a transexual woman.
She was born in 1946 in Cuenca, Spain in an abusive household.
Due to her parents rejection, she fled home at 16, moving to Barcelona in hopes of a better lifestyle. There she found happiness having freedom to be herself, she worked in the nightlife, being an erotic dancer.
Sadly, due to childhood abuse and unresolved trauma, she became a heroin user and started to work as a prostitute.
She met her demise on October 6th, 1991, when a group of skinheads spotted her and her friend sleeping under a gazebo in Ciutadella Park. After realizing that they were "transvestites", they brutally beat Sonia and her friend Doris while they were defenseless. Doris managed to survive, Sonia wasn't as lucky.
Sonia's murder became the first murder of a Transexual judged as a hate crime in Spain. And the gazebo where she was murdered was renamed in her honor.
Today, all her killers walk free.
