emeritusnaâ:
Na didnât have to wait for long: an older gentleman made his way into the lobby to greet her and led her back down a hallway and into a room that looked much more like what sheâd been expecting: wooden shelves, bottles and bottles of wines stacked high around them.
âMx. Anatheme,â he greeted as the two of them walked. âWeâre so pleased to have you here. Now, Iâve set aside a few options based on the information you sent us ahead for your order, if youâll come right this wayââ
There was a table, in the room, a few glasses, a bucket, several different bottles lined up.Â
âYes,â she answered, casting a discerning eye over the different bottles as if already making note of them. Even from the labels, she couldnât tell the difference in quality, just which ones were reds and whites, the various kinds. âWeâre looking for your finest, for this event; our client will accept no less.â
âOf course, of course, and thatâs what weâve got hereâ here, why donât we start out with a Caldera red. This one here,â he said, picking up one of the bottles to show her the label and the name, âis from the Proteus Caldera region, just south of here.â
âAnd the year?â she asked, remembering Luxâs note, waiting for Lux to give her an assessment of the rest of the information heâd given her and doing her best to look like she knew what she was looking at.
Lux listened carefully as the conversation moved into the testing. Caldera red, not her favorite but one of the higher-shelf varieties. While she preferred red wine, most vintages from the south of Demeter gave her a headache. Her personal taste, though, was neither here nor there. Performing a quick search on the performance of that regionâs reds, she found about what she expected. Generally excellent standards except for a few outlier seasons.Â
âThis is mostly a fine choice but not the top of the top,â she relayed. Now that Na was in the presence of someone else, she pitched her voice a little lower, just to be sure that the man from the vineyard didnât overhear anything. This wine was good, good enough for Albaâs establishment, certainly. But likely not quality enough for this job.Â
Over the link, she heard the man denote it as 2997 vintage. Scrolling through the information, Lux scanned the notes on that particular year. âNeeds a few more years before itâs gonna really be at its best.â
Now on to the actual tasting. âOkay, this is a quick sell not a whole tasting, so donât worry about spending too much time on the glass. Hold it up to the light, and squint a little bit. Then give it a little swirl, sniff just at the rim of the glass, and taste it.â She had seen clients and escorts themselves do this countless times. Luckily Na wouldnât need to fake much more than the pantomime. âIf you want to get fancy, say something about its âpolishâ and âlight body.â Otherwise, just tell him that this one is not quite mature enough and that weâll need something far more impressive.â
