jimin is locking up the last cat cage and dusting his palms off on his jeans when he hears the jingle of the door opening. he peers around the corner warily, knowing that it’s unlikely anyone would be breaking into an animal shelter, but it’s close to midnight and they’re closed.
“hello?” he calls tentatively, and then curses himself because - what the fuck? if he’d learnt anything from watching stupid horror movie, he’d be dead by now.
he makes out a tall, handsome figure standing at the door, swaying slightly on his feet. jimin’s gut sinks. if he’s going to die, he won’t go without a fight. jimin picks up the nearest mop with shaking hands.
“we’re closed right now,” jimin adds, taking a few steps closer, brandishing the mop out like a sword. fuck, thank god this isn’t a horror movie, because jimin is really making one terrible decision after another. he’s soon near enough that he can make out the stranger’s face, and then he freezes and drops the mop - not out of terror but out of confusion. because the tall, handsome, potential serial killer is crying. “are you… are you okay?”
“hey, listen, do you need to sit down? are you… lost?”
the man continues to sob, shaking his head furiously. jimin guides him over to the couch in the waiting room, a little numb. this does beat being murdered, so jimin will count any blessing at this point.
“do you need help? are you hurt - oh. okay, this is fine.” jimin awkwardly strokes the man’s head as he aggressively buries his face into jimin’s shoulder, sobs racking his body. “um.”
“i just want to pet a dog,” he whispers fiercely, fisting his hand into jimin’s volunteer vest. “a really big - really big - fluffy dog. is that too much to ask for?”
“oh. um.” jimin is floored. he also smells the familiar stench of alcohol, which explains a whole lot. “um. no, actually. we have… we have some big… fluffy dogs. do you want to meet them?”
abruptly, the man sits up. he cups jimin’s face in large hands, gazing into his eyes with passion.
okay. okay. this is fine. jimin’s fine. he blinks the stars away from his eyes and forces himself to stop counting the man’s lashes for god’s sake. “i’m sorry, could you repeat that? i wasn’t - ”
“i love you,” the stranger proclaims.
in a daze, jimin leads the man - taehyung he soon learns - to the dog kennels, despite it being against every protocol.
he goes home that same night with burning cheeks, and taehyung’s brilliant grin seared behind his eyelids.
