Corey Lunn found a video of the 1979 eclipse at the Maryhill Stone Henge where my mom, pop, and little (big brother) Zachary Margolis saw it. Wonderful to see how the hippies celebrated. My dad says the place was crawling in druids. I think I found my family at minute 5:31.
CJ McCollum started high school at 5′2″! Heart throb little spider!
Barry Jenkins narrates a swimming sequence from “Moonlight” featuring Alex Hibbert and Mahershala Ali.
Understatement to say that I am in love with this film.
Really feeling like I should work on my camel toe.

Oh yeah oh yeah
Landfill Conference
Mesmerizing. I would like a plastic replica, of course, of a bowl of noodles, with some unusual greens. Do they have a drawer of sesame seeds? Tokyo-ga by Wim Wenders, 1985.
Love this drawing by Corey!

Now that’s a good preview!
Good radio!
I have really enjoyed the last couple episodes of Underground Airwaves, the podcast that my pal Chris hosts and I help produce. Underground Airwaves is a food story podcast, so we let things get pretty loose and free. I recently started a new series as a complement called I Want to Know What You Know, in which we choose the host and they choose the guest--ideally someone they are infatuated with.
Underground Airwaves has a mess of events and projects coming up, but in these moments before the storm, may I please suggest you check out a few recent knock-out shows?
The Hearing Fields with Charles Boardman
When a young WWOOFer finds himself on a biodynamic saffron farm in Sardinia, jogging with sheep and chasing donkeys, his mind circles back to home.
The Stuff I Obsess About
In this episode of I Want to Know What You Know, chef Joshua McFadden of Ava Genes interviews topflight furniture designer and obsessive extraordinaire Tyler Hays on life in rural Oregon, burying jars of admixtures underground to see how they change, following your gut, and burying your dead downwind.

Meet the Boutards, who are creating their own varietals of plants and bringing the hippie homesteader’s self-reliant dreams to life.
Here’s a story I wrote for Lucky Peach that I’m cow-jumped-over-the-moon excited to share with you. It’s an interview and profile of Anthony and Carol Boutard, two radical farmers who are bucking the system and producing their own plant varietals. They also happen to be among the finest people to spend time with.
Enormous thanks to Apres Ski Instructor for the introduction to the editors.
Entrepreneurs are feverishly trying to domesticate Oregon’s wild truffles. Will it work?
This story takes a close look at the burgeoning Oregon truffle farming industry and its biggest proponents. The story itself took years of gestation to reach its ripe, stinky fruiting. I am keeping my eyes on the Oregon truffle industry. I’m an excitable skeptic.
It was originally published in the Edible Portland winter 2014-2015 issue.

You sexy thang, you woolen man
Maybe six years ago, I found myself quite without warning holding a video camera while Fred Nemo danced around my house to the song Your Sexy Thang. He was dressed all in black with the Woolen Man -- a life-sized knitted skeleton with organs that Cynthia Star and her crew had made -- pinned to his front. (Her project inspired the name for the great band The Woolen Men!) It was like a dream. And then I never heard anything about it, and I questioned whether it had ever taken place. But lo and behold, yesterday, Cynthia sent a video. A video I took! And it is as strange and magical as it was while it happened. Special appearances by Tender Vittles the cat.
You could watch this just for the prancing, which is mesmerizing, but it’s also worth it for the song!
