This is the first fill for our October prompts event. Due to real life circumstances, we have been slacking, but check out the prompts page and think about submitting something. Just ignore the whole October thing.
Here's the prompt text:
"In episode 904, we find out that Dean kept the pencil box he gave Sam for his tenth birthday after the events of Swan Song, and even though everything else of Samâs was stowed in the trunk, he placed the pencil box on the mantle. Can we see the scene between seasons 5 and 6 where he makes that decision?"

Episode 909
âDirty Water Dyingâ
Chapter One
He is in the back of the car, his knees are bent and he is lying in the back of the car. Â But his knees donât hit the back of the passenger seat, his shoulders arenât hunched forward trying to fit, his head isnât quirked up at an odd sideways angle against the door, itâs propped up on a lap.
Thereâs blood in his mouth, thereâs a warm hand on his side. Â He is twelve.
âShh, Sammy. Â Itâs okay.â
Dean, Dean. Â
His leg is wet and filled with heat, as he wakes up the ache grows and itâs sharp with every bump in the road, theyâre going fast he realizes, so fast, and itâs nighttime, and Dad is so quiet.
He shouldnât have been out, he wasnât allowed out, but Dean had forgotten the binding thing, the string Uncle Bobby had given them to bind the monster and Dad and Dean were going to get killed if they didnât have what they needed, so Sam had gone out in the snow to find them, to give it to them, and --
He hadnât seen it. Â Dad was yelling and he should have listened, but he needed to give Dad the string, and he hadnât seen the monster and then all he saw was Deanâs face, worried and pale in the moonlight, crying and yelling, angry, scared--
He is lying with his head in Deanâs lap. Â One of Deanâs hands is on his side, soothing and heavy and warm. Â The other is smoothing Samâs hair, and Sam is hurt, heâs hurt and heâs dying, he knows it, and heâs sorry, heâs sorry--
âDid we get it?â he says, and in the front, Dad draws in a sharp breath through his nose, stiff and annoyed.
Dean frowns. Â âYeah. Â We got it.â
âDean--â
He doesnât go on. Â He doesnât need to. Â Dean squeezes him at the hip, smooths his hair down over his ear, his hand comes to rest on Samâs forehead, heavy and warm and solid Deanâs hand on his forehead, and Dean says, âYouâre okay, kiddo. Â Youâre gonna be okay.â
He hums. Â The tune is so familiar, but Sam canât place it. Â Dean is singing, but he canât make out the words. Â The radio isnât on, but he hears the gentle unresolving chords, the lyrical lead guitar line over top of the jangling strum on repeat, the story in the words he canât make out, Dean is almost plaintive, like this song is for Sam, to Sam, like heâs afraid Sam will leave him someday, like Sam can ever leave, or like heâd ever want to. Â Like he can see a life for himself beyond this car, beyond Dad and Dean and the smell of blood and gunpowder and leather, beyond the soothing bump of the road as sure as any lullaby.
Like there is another place besides Dean that could ever be home.
He did not wake up in the dungeon. Â He was in his bed, warm, wounds dressed, he could feel the stitches pull, he could feel the ache of his relocated thumb. Â His memory of the last couple of weeks faded back to him like remembering a dream, the feel of it more vibrant and clear than the actual details.
Flowers in a silver crown, the bright bright red of sacred (tainted) blood in a porcelain bowl. Â The sulfur in the back of his throat. Â Days and days and days of hoping, of giving up.
Dean had come. Â Dean had come.

Sam and Dean catch a case deep in the wilderness where some fugly has been snatching hikers. Same song, different singer. The boys disagree about what they're hunting, how they should hunt it, whether they should split up -- but when Dean is on the menu, Sam has to prove that he's up for the task. 5 chapters, 26k
Fifteen minutes out of the cabin, Sam still had no idea how to kill the thing, nevermind how he was going to find it. Â He figured it had dragged Dean back to its home base, and either way, his first goal was to find Dean, save Dean--
--the arc of red into the air as Dean flies back into the clearing from the underbrush, onto his back, and heâs turning toward Sam to tell him heâs fine, just get to the cabin, Sam who is trying to sort what is real from what is something Lucifer is showing him--
Sam moved through the brush along an animal trail, back toward where heâd first encountered the creature one on one. Â Deanâs trail would pick up at the bottom of that ravine, and Sam would just have to find him. Â They could work out how to hunt the thing once Dean was found. Â But Sam remembered the red of Deanâs blood, in the air and on the rock where he disappeared -- if he was alive (he was alive, Sam would know somehow if he wasnât), Dean was still injured. Â
What a fucking failure of a hunt. Â Way to go, Sammy.
