Let’s not credit just Chris Sanders for this. This happened because they cast actual Hawaiian Actors like Tia Carrere and Jason Scott Lee to play Hawaiian characters, and allowed the actors to have input into writing the characters’ lines.

This sort of authenticity comes from accuracy and authenticity in casting choices. The fact that Chris Sanders as direct/writer facilitated that does not mean he gets credit for the actors’ experience.

This is why diversity and representation in media matters.

similarly there was a deleted scene where she scares tourists off of a beach by sounding a false tsunami siren to watch them run screaming deeper in the lore that kid thats a prick to her, mertyle, is the daughter of the person who runs the megamart and crushed a lot of other local businesses- when they have to do a hula to tell a story mertyle actually uses it to describe the low prices, where lilo does a hula about a traditional creation myth that was important to her mother. you may notice both lilo and nani are on first name basis with both the coffee shop owner and the fruitseller, there is big disparity between the locals and foreign interest businesses relegating them to just be tourist industry

I just don’t get it. Jon x Val is one of the most slept on ships I’ve ever seen, although most of their interactions and almost everything about them is made of so much ship tease. Like, Jon is clearly super attracted to her? His physical descriptions of her (of which there are many) are just so Extra? And she’s clearly into him, too? And they’re always flirting?? And sometimes Jon instigates it? For real, Jon “my little sister had to give me pointers on how to talk to girls” Snow, just flirting with ease! And they stood so close to each other under the moonlight the frost from their breaths intermingled? Then she kissed him on the cheek? And when he first heard a scream coming from the tower he immediately worried that it might be Val?? Even tho it ended up being a man’s scream? And don’t get me started on how he was legit tempted by Stannis’s offer of her and Winterfell and legit imagined her having his babies and even after he turned Stannis down for valid reasons he was like, Damn, “I might have had her.” And just the fact that he has been offered her hand in marriage. And Ghost just took a quick and easy liking to her? And Jon thinks they look like they belong together. He thinks Val and his soul counterpart animal look like they belong together, I just—why are they so slept on???

100% agree. Their interactions give me the warm and fuzzies. I don’t know exactly what Val’s role is going to be or what Jon’s state is going to be post resurrection, but she shares Jon’s values and goals. And Val is just special and set apart for non-shippy reasons. I for one don’t think she will wind up being all that minor of a character.

Her manner of speech seems more like a noble from south of the wall than typical of most Free Folk. That makes her parentage somewhat interesting and I wonder if that will ever be brought up. Perhaps one of them was a kneeler. She certainly does not speak like Ygritte, Tormund, or Mance even though she identifies thoroughly as a Free Folk woman. Hardly the most important thing, but it does make her stand out.

The way she warns Jon about greyscale only being dormant in children and the maesters being wrong seems like we would be wise to listen. “Ask a woodswitch if you would know the truth.” Sounds as if her people have had first hand experience with the disease and how it spreads. And I’ve heard people think Val is a villain for her bluntness over euthanizing such children, but this is a medieval-ish world with little to no means of battling a deadly epidemic once it starts. And she is affectionate towards children, okay?

Her all white clothes, white bearskin cloak and weirwood brooch seems like the regalia of a “wise woman” or spiritual leader. Especially when it comes at the scene where Jon says she and Ghost “look like they belong together.” “Look for me on the first day of the full moon.” This line and with her white regalia seems very suspiciously like “look to my coming on the first light of the fifth day, at dawn look to the east.” (Gandalf. LOTR The Two Towers). I doubt George would give her such an iconic reference if she’s not supposed to be important to Jon’s story.

^^ So many people completely discount Val because they don’t think she’ll have anything to do with the War for the Dawn, or whatever (and why is that all some readers seem to judge the characters’ significance on?). But even if she doesn’t, she clearly has a lot to do with Jon’s arc, and he’s pretty damn important. She was introduced into the story via him way back in A Storm of Swords, for one thing. She’s been around for more than half the series. I think people really forget just how long she’s actually been part of Jon’s narrative.

Of the limited Val discussions I actually have seen, and as you know, there’s a good number of theories around her and her status among the Free Folk, possible spiritual status, possible lineage, etc. And while I don’t know how these will pan out, if at all, I do appreciate the insight and meta, and definitely prefer it to her existence just getting brushed aside by most of the fandom. But I will say, I am all in on the idea that Jon has already inadvertently “stolen” her, and she and the Free Folk consider her “his”, and he just hasn’t realized it (again, lol).

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again since no-one has yet given me a valid reason as to why James Potter, lacking a wand, didn’t just transform into Prongs when Voldy turned up and like… fucking spear him. Why didn’t he do that? Like I don’t care how astonishingly powerful a dark wizard he was, no-one could ever be prepared for walking into a house and there’s just… a massive fuck off stag staring you down? How could you possibly react to that?

You couldn’t, giving said stag the opportunity to put an antler through his eye and save the day. Not to mention, can you imagine the Prophet headlines if that was how it’d gone down?
