it’s lowkey incredibly funny how much the adult gaang movie desperately tries to retroactively erase every single zutara moment from the original show. chest scar magically gone while aang’s is as intact as ever. zuko saving toph from falling rocks because the tsr rocks scene they created as shipping fodder did its job too well. apprently covid’s become a thing in atla universe because zuko and katara are social distancing at all times. a “haha!gotchu!” throwback to a joke about how they could Never Be A Couple Where Did You Even Get That Idea You Must Be Crazy (and the joke is made specifically with the old versions of the characters because No One is allowed to imagine that even in their last years of their lives these two could be together). zuko is big and buff but aang is big and just-as-buff — even tho you’d think airbenders would genetically be lean and lanky due to the whole flying and reducing wind resistance and difference in diet thing, but whatever — because god forbid katara or any other stupid females watching thirst for the wrong guy. not a single word exchanged between two people whose last official interaction was one taking lightning for the other & the other weeping tears of joy as she brought him back to life. makes sense that those two people wouldn’t be friends. or touch. or make eye contact once in almost 2 hours.

I haven’t watched this movie.

Writing a book is a horrible, exhausting struggle, like a long bout with some painful illness. One would never undertake such a thing if one were not driven on by some demon whom one can neither resist nor understand.

The thing is I don't think this was actually intended, but like. Zuko going from somebody offering to heal his pain, someone who has no reason to actually care, to being surrounded by people who should care but don't. Katara who burns with such emotion that Zuko sees himself reflected in her, and then Zuko immediately having to go to a place where he has to constantly repress his emotions. The subtext is there and it's not accidental. It's not a stretch at all to imagine that Zuko might've thought about what he almost had.
