you don't have to be the next fields medalist but some basic knowledge of probability can help so much in identifying misinformation and subtle lies online and in the news, statistics can arm you against black box social media algorithms, calculus helps so much to measure the way things change, linear algebra will make your life so much easier if your job uses tables of data, etc. and on top of all of this it's silly to argue we should only study things that are useful, and math as a field is perfect for this because its austere beauty and elegance, refined over millennia, are second to none
