How “Glowing” Sharks See Each Other
How do biofluorescent sharks see the world? The recent discovery of more than 200 biofluorescent marine creatures has sparked interest in the biological and ecological roles of this phenomenon. Marine biologist and National Geographic Emerging Explorer David Gruber delves into the study of how these creatures see by designing a “shark-eye camera” that replicates the vision of biofluorescent sharks. Gruber enters the deep waters of Scripps Canyon, off the coast of Southern California, to image glowing swell sharks without the aid of artificial light. The resulting footage shows that swell sharks see each other’s biofluorescent markings much better than other objects in the dark, blue sea.

Researchers are still trying to determine what purpose the neon colors serve.
I recently spotted a biofluorescent Hawksbill turtle (GlowBill) in the Solomon Islands! 🐢
Biofluorescent Hawsbill Turtle!
This biofluorescent hawksbill turtle was first imaged on a full moon night in a remote region of the Solomon Islands. Although the Solomon Islands possess the largest rookery for hawksbill turtles in the oceanic South Pacific, globally E. imbricata is critically endangered and remains under threat from climate change, illegal trade, by-catch and legal subsistence take. The novel observation of fluorescence in E. imbricata highlights the urgency to understand and better protect and manage this critically endangered species.

“The glowing breed of shark is known as the swell shark, or Cephaloscyllium ventriosum, and is fluorescent thanks to a compound within its skin that glows bright green when activated by blue light. Humans can’t see this spectacular light display, but swell sharks may be able to. (IFLscience)

Weedy Seadragon!
Phyllopteryx taeniolatus, in all her glory….This weedy seadragon lives down to 50 meters in areas that are covered in seaweed. Its “weedy” complexion helps it blend in amongst the algae. There are only three known species of seadragons, with the Ruby Seadragon (Phyllopteryx dewysea) being discovered in 2015! How many other seadragons roam the seas?

Bioluminescent Barbeled Dragonfish!
This beauty (a.k.a. Idiacanthus) lives about a mile deep underwater. They have weirdly stalked eyes as baby larvae (A) and the stalks somehow disappear as they mature (B). Almost nothing is known about their reproductive habits (how, when and where), but you can see that they dine on jellyfish (look inside B's throat). Idiacanthus live in all the oceans of the world. These gorgeous pictures were taken by Dr. Christina Wahl and appear in her book, Morphometrics.
Fluorescent Coral
"This staghorn coral contains fluorescent molecules that absorb light from an external source — in this case, the sun — and then emit light at a different wavelength. Museum zoologist David Gruber takes advantage of this to take close-up images of corals. These form part of his research into the patterns and function of fluorescent proteins. Some of these proteins have been co-opted as important tools in biomedical research."
