Since different size nails represent development and growth, i have intentionally let the nails show to emphasis the establishment of these roads and the continous discovery of oil which provides kuwait with opportunties to develop more. Since oil is still being discovered, nails are visible to show future potentional growth.

This is the projected background image. It is of the Arabian Gulf and Kuwait's desert. Prior to oil findings in the 1940s, kuwait depended on pearl diving, explaing the establishment of Kuwait city lies along the coastline. From pearls to oil, kuwaits economy now depends on oil.

Both of these images are of road maps in kuwait. The one of the left was the first sketch ive made and developed it to what ive used (right image). The lines are color coded for me to use as a template while using thread.

From afar it is uncertain of the medium used. Up close, the thread line drawing creates depth and texture.

Trying to line up my projection with my work was quiet challenging; but the results are astonishing.

one of the first sketches of the map that i am doing.  The way i visualized it was that Kuwait’s roads are like a grid; interlocking, crossing, emerging, expanding and providing direction. 

i am trying to work with the same shades of color for each road, to unify the map and create a balance.  For example, the black thread compliments the dark green thread, and the off white thread compliments the light green thread.

What intrigues me most is when i look at the line drawing from the sides; where you can visualize the line, shape, texture and depth.

The colors ive used are shades of one color; shades of green, red, blue.  The different shades of one color layered creates different perspective.  For the highways leading to oil fields, i thought to include the color yellow/gold.  Kuwait is known for its black gold, which is oil.
