âFakeâ news is a real problem and here are some great tips to evaluate what youâre reading!
(Keep in mind though, that much ânewsâ is also based in some fact, but often tilted to represent a bias or ideological slant. In general, watch out for sensational/alarmist headlines, no sources cited in the text, and lots of emotional/judgmental language. Good sources for relatively unbiased news: The New York Times, BBC News, Associated Press, and NPR.)
Not sure if a news source may be biased? Ask a librarian!
(Image from IFLA. Text reads:Â Consider the source: Click away from the story to investigate the site, its mission and its contact info. Read beyond: Headlines can be outrageous in an effort to get clicks. Whatâs the whole story? Check the author: Do a quick search on the author. Are they credible? Are they real? Supporting sources: Click on those links. Determine if the info given actually supports the story. Check the date: Reposting old news stories doesnât mean theyâre relevant to current events. Is it a joke?: If it is too outlandish, it might be satire. Research the site and author to be sure. Check your biases: Consider if your own beliefs could affect your judgement. Ask the experts: Ask a librarian, or consult a fact-checking site.)
Do you actually know all the state capitals?

Today, the sign Scott Bonner put in the Ferguson library amidst the protests in 2014 seems especially relevant. If you need a place of peace, we are here to provide one, always.

When we talk about banquets, when we talk about this sort of utopian promise of food for all for all timeâthis is what libraries for me prefigure. They are a banquet for all and a banquet clearly of the mind, and for someone like me, and perhaps for someone like Ray Bradbury, perhaps a banquet for the soulâŚ
Junot Diaz, on libraries.
Come check out some banned books from our display in Cudahy in honor of Banned Books Week!
FYI: students at Loyola will be staging a protest against police brutality in front of the IC today at 3:45 pm.
"In light of the recent police murders of numerous unarmed Black men, Black Loyola students have announced they will be holding a protest on Loyolaâs campus. Last year, Black students organized the largest demonstration in university history with over 800 students in attendance. The protest will be taking place in front of the Information Commons on Monday, September 26th, at 3:45pm. All students, faculty, and staff are invited to participate by wearing black and standing in solidarity."

Itâs international peace day today! The theme for 2016 is âThe Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace,â something we can definitely get behind at Loyola. Learn more at the UNâs website.
