there’s  a  kindness  that  catches  in  her  throat,  the  kind  of  sweet  pleasantries  and  humble  offerings  that  almost  beg  to  come  through  like  the  hard  earned  habits  of  a  girl  immersed  in  the  art  of  exchange,  but  even  more  so  heartfelt  with  the  fact  of  resplendence  being  held  so  close.  it  almost  take  more  than  she  has  to  fight  the  urge  to  respond,  and  almost  even  more  than  that  to  relent  and  reground  her  from  a  lingering  cradle  with  a  careful  bend  of  her  back,  stiffening  with  the  gentle  grace  of  a  touch  leaving  as  quickly  as  it  had  come.  the  luxury  of  indulging  familiarity  is  one  much  too  far  out  of  her  reach,  but  it  doesn’t  keep  her  from  loitering  just  a  bit  longer  than  she  should  to  try  and  do  just  that,  just  enough  to  look  into  the  eyes  of  a  pretty  idol  adored.

of  course,  she  eventually  acknowledges  the  truth  of  her  words  with  more  silence  and  a  nod,  though  this  time,  with  something  more  reminiscing  dwelling  beneath  the  surface.  korin’s  involvement  in  something  far  greater  in  cosmology  and  purpose  than  most  could  handle  might  have  been  enough  to  startle  her,  but  this  much  is  clear:  she  is  no  longer  the  memory  of  child  she  clung  to  in  her  mind’s  eye.  marceline  smiles  behind  obscurity,  beyond  her  own  awareness  —  even  still,  a  promise  of  hers  is  a  promise  to  be  kept  —  korin’s  present  awareness  of  this  doesn’t  particularly  matter,  only  that  the  fact  of  her  safety  secured  is  something  they  both  can  depart  with,  regardless  of  how  reluctantly  that  may  come  to  be.
