Annual Parade in the Netherlands Pays Homage to Vincent van Gogh with Massive Flower Floats

The Coro Zundert parade in the Netherlands celebrates the country’s reputation as a global supplier of dahlia flowers since 1936. This year 19 teams payed homage and drew inspiration from the work of Vincent van Gogh. The flowery floats are filled with imagery, colors and expressions from van Gogh’s signature style. The floats are now a mixture of tradition and urban art, which are a beautiful spectacle to attend yearly.

Hotel Chevalier // 2007

Written and Directed by Wes Anderson

Starring Jason Schwartzman and Natalie Portman

Hotel Chevalier, the prequel to Wes Anderson’s The Darjeeling Limited, showcases Anderson’s unique individual style, as well as Jason Schwartzman’s talent. He is as much of a staple in Anderson’s films as is the director’s careful construction (with regards to both the set and dialogue) and poignant plots.

The colour palette, especially the yellow and greys, draws out the symmetry inherent in the shots. This is shown in the multiple shots of the hotel’s bed, each with Schwartzman in a different state of mind. Colourful insets, such as the suitcase and ‘Hotel Chevalier’ chocolate are also delightful quirks of Anderson that add to the picture.

The story told in this short film, both abrupt yet filled with characterization and yearning, is enhanced or perhaps made by Wes Anderson’s contributions stylistically. The main draw of Hotel Chevalier is not necessarily the plot or the fact that it is a wonderful example of Anderson’s directorial style, but the unanswered questions it leaves you with about the troubled relationship between its two main characters.
