so in one of the men of the otherworld stories, nick is 8 years old and joey stillwell is 12. they’re playmates and friends. they basically grow up together. when nick is about 20 I THINK and joey 24, that’s about when jeremy fights for alphahood and joey and his father leave the pack. the only person getting a goodbye from joey is clay. nick never got one.
fast forward many many many years, to book 10 of the wotow series, frostbitten. i can’t remember how old they are, but around their fourties. joey had a son, noah (who i have on my multi) and there was a big deal about how his son was taken and he was trying to get him back and elena and clay found him and he ended up stabbing them in the back and then YEETED leaving without saying goodbye (for good reasons there lmao) but also abandoning his son and no one knows what happened to him. and nick shows up later and was like “joey why :C” but he TAKES IN AND ADOPTS NOAH, JOEY’S SON, AND I CRY

Uncle-hood.” A shadow crossed his face, but he hid it behind a quick swig of coffee. “That’s it,” I said softly. “You’re thinking about yourself. Fatherhood.” “Can you see me being a father?” “Do you want to be?” A sharp shake of his head. “Never really thought about it before.”
something I love about nicks in the wotow books is that he expressed that he didn't want to have kids. that was his own personal feelings. he also felt guilt over it bc he thought he should give antonio a grandson. there's actually a very heartbreaking conversation about it:
“Is that it? You feel like you should give him one? A grandson?”
"Shouldn’t I? Hell, what else do I give him? I’m forty-three, never left home, piss around his company pretending I’m working…” He cut himselfoff with a snarl of disgust. “And I can’t even bother bringing him home a grandson?”
“Do you think he cares? My God, Nick, if you think your father expects you to have a son for him…Antonio would never—”
“Of course, he wouldn’t. He doesn’t expect anything of me. And he’s never disappointed.”
like I said, heartbreaking. but something I love is that.... this didn't end with him having a kid, like a lot of "I don't want kids" plots do. what happened was so much better? nick ended up taking in (adopting shhh) two young werewolves. reese williams & noah albright who were about.... 21 & 17. then he takes morgan walsh in, who's in his later twenties, and then davis cain who's...... 19, I think? so he ends up taking in these young werewolves with nowhere else to go. and helps them, teaches them, which also helps the "dadding instinct" that werewolves feel. and like he views them as his kids even if he wouldn't actually say it that way.
and idk I just think he's neat

This isn’t your d a d d y’s world, Malcolm. It isn’t even your world. That time has passed. The Pack can’t just skim the newspapers for mutts on k illing sprees. These days, two man-eating cases a continent apart can be linked. H E L L, some kid catches us Changing and puts it on YouTube and we’re in trouble. Werewolves can no longer take their sons from their mothers and trust they’ll never be caught. Nor can they ignore their daughters and trust that the girls can’t track them down. A connected world means a new way of thinking. And as one of those kids taken from his mother, I’m glad to see those ways pass. So, yes, it’s not your Pack. IT’S BETTER, and everyone else in it agrees, so if you want to do your CROTCHETY OLD MAN THING, go find an oldschool Pack that suits you better.”

Karl pauses, irritated, arms coming to cross over his chest. He isn’t really the type to waste his time like this; to sit around being ignored. “Are they?” He’ll never understand the pack’s enthusiasm for running together, enthusiasm Nick seems to be filled with. HE CHANGES BECAUSE IT’S NECESSARY; not something to whine about but nothing something to enjoy, either. Once a week is for health and then there are times he needs it to achieve his goals. “More fun, I mean. I don’t really see much difference.” In fact, changing in front of someone else is dangerous ( his father died because he got stuck – he wouldn’t get stuck again but it still put him in a vulnerable position for few minutes ).
“Sure. Company makes everything more fun. Someone to run with, play with. Teamwork makes the dreamwork.” It was more than that, of course, but running alone was - well - LONELY. Nick didn’t say it, because maybe that was just a HIM thing. Clay certainty didn’t seem to care. The rest of the pack always made their scheduled runs, even if they were alone. But Nick - well, hated was a strong word, but it was not enjoyable without someone else there to spend time with. ( was it healthy? probably not, but it’s not like he did it frequently....) “Just a quick run, enough to get my energy out - then you’ll have a 95% captive audience. Cross my heart.”

He’s trying to hide the injury but he’s doing a piss-poor job at it – plus, she’s NOT STUPID. And the sight of blood doesn’t move her. It never had ( she used to sneak into their healer’s den, watched as he put werewolves back together. possibly the only memory of her old pack she doesn’t hate ). “Did you kill him?” she asks as she takes a step closer to sniff at it. It doesn’t smell rotten, at least. Maybe it won’t get infected. “I know.” With a roll of her eyes, Leah puts it on the table. “I also know you need stiches and you can’t put them in yourself, not at that angle.” Satisfied, she takes out a bottle of a wound cleanser and turns towards him. “Come on, stop hiding it. I won’t faint. You might cause this will hurt like a bitch.”
There’s a moment of silence, before a sigh and a nod of his head. “Yeah. I did.” He’s not going to lie to her, and she’s likely used to violence from her old pack. Still, it’s not like he was going to BOAST about it. He grimaced and moved his arm to let Leah have a better view. “I’m sure Jeremy will be back any time now-” he shifted his arm again as a sharp burst of pain flared through “Fuck!” he clenched his other fist tightly. “I’m not going to faint. I’ve had my fair share of stiches done.”

“It looks like we do.” Nick said with a laugh, and an amused shake of his head. He’s not one to talk about his friends behind their backs but he loves that there’s someone else who UNDERSTANDS what it’s like. “Thankfully I’ve never had to worry about Salvatore-switching, but damn, the bad guys sure do LOVE HER. She’s more than capable of handling them, but I’m gladly there to punch a few creeps out for her.”

“I certainly hope you are; it’s what every girl deserves.” Rebekah has had enough of pinning over men who can’t match even half of her love and commitment. “Right. You’re up from up north, aren’t you? A Sorrentino. An old family.” Modern werewolves might be daft, but Rebekah is not. But before she can tear into him any more, he mentions A SURPRISE PICNIC. Bloody – picnic. A sigh escapes her as she imagines how nice that would be, being treated to such thing. “Unfortunately, she doesn’t seem very capable of taking care of herself.” Easing off slightly, she turns away from him in search of bourbon. “SHE’S NOT HERE; a magic emergency, of a sort. Fine, you can stay here and wait for her. We’ll get to know each other better.”
“Yeah. That’d be me.” He’s not surprised that she’s heard of his family. It’s not like Dominic had been quiet during his time as alpha, or Emilio, or any Sorrentino before them. Hell, for all he knew, Rebekah had met the Sorrentino family before they left Italy. “She definitely doesn’t put her own needs high on her list of priorities - but they’re high on my list. I know she’s busy a lot but - I just want her to be happy, you know?” He’s positive he’s not making any sense, but he also knows that Freya’s family is a large part of the reason WHY she’s always busy. He doesn’t fault her for fighting for them, he’d do the same for his, but he just wants to make sure that she is okay. “Thanks. I hope it’s nothing too dangerous?” He’d be happy to give her some backup, though he’d probably be pretty useless when it comes to MAGIC problems. “What do you want to know about me? I’m an open book.”
