chapter 2 <- chapter 3
“What are you doing here?” You ushered him into your room and slammed the window shut.
“Wanted to make sure you were… okay,” he breathed out. You looked around confused and frustrated that you couldn’t see his expression. The hero then stumbled onto the floor as his breaths became heavier.
“Yeah… I’ll just… stay here for a minute.” He accepted his defeat.
“Oh my god! Your leg!” Despite not seeing it before, you noticed his leg was bleeding. You blamed your drunken state for not seeing it earlier.
“Just bleeding out, nothing new,” he let out a soft chuckle as you grabbed a fresh washcloth from your drawer. Remembering what he told you last time, you applied pressure to the wound. “Ow! A little too hard.” He jolted up in pain.
“Sorry! Sorry!” You freaked out and gently pressed down on his leg. “Sorry, there’s just a lot on my mind.”
“Don’t need to apologize. Everything alright?” Spider-Man laid back down and stared up at the ceiling.
“Just men are so frustrating,” you huffed out. “Why talk to me for seven months just to use me for fucking homework and sex.” Your words slurred together and you let out a bitter laugh. “You know? I’ve just been such a good friend. For fucks sake, I might as well be getting credit for his classes since I'm the one ending up writing his papers.”
Spider-Man just listened as you ranted out loud. Although he couldn’t really move if he wanted to, the company was nice for the two of you.
“You know, spidey, never like a man.” You narrowed your eyes at the masked hero in all seriousness.
“Are you drunk?”
“Very much so.”
“Are you always drunk?” The white eyes on his mask widened as he realized he shouldn’t have said that.
“Believe it or not, I’m a normal college student, Spider-Man.” your voice was bitter. “You just so happened to catch me drunk, like, twice now. So…” your voice trailed off as you stared out into the night sky.
“You’re right, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to assume you’re an alcoholic.” He let out a sigh while you just nodded along, not paying that much attention. “I’m sorry.”
“S’okay. I used to not be like this, so it just… catches me off guard sometimes.” He hummed softly, noting that he was following along. You removed the washcloth from his leg seeing that the bleeding had stopped. “Um, so, I only have Disney princess bandaids…” the hero laughed while you smiled, embarrassed.
“Give me Rapunzel.” You laughed as you searched in the box for the purple bandaid with the blonde princess on it.
Carefully putting the bandaid over the wound, you smiled victoriously at your work. The hero couldn’t help but stare at you in awe, your drunk self seemed so free and careless, something that he’d never seen in you before. The bandaid definitely did not cover the entire wound, but he thought to himself he’d bandage the rest up later.
The two of you burst into a fit of giggles at the sight of the princess bandaid. To you, it was the silliest thing to happen that night and to the hero, he was just happy to see you smiling.
-
“Hellooo, Y/n,” a snap in front of your eyes brought you back to reality. “You still with me?”
“Huh? Oh… yeah, sorry.” You sheepishly smiled at the blonde boy.
“Does this sound good?” Nate handed his computer to you so you could proofread it.
“You used the wrong ‘their,’” you pointed out. “Multiple times, actually.” He rolled his eyes and took his computer back to fix his spelling.
You had been working together in his room for the last hour. You had been taking in his motorcycle posters and navy blue sheets, wondering if this was really what you wanted.
“Hey, Nate?” He hummed in response. “Do you like me?” The question was blunt, but you just had to know. He got up from his desk and sat down next to you on the bed.
“What kind of question is that?” You shrugged and messed with your rings. “Of course I like you, you’re one of my best friends.” A pit in your stomach formed at the word friends but he then cupped your face and lightly kissed you. “And you’re the best kisser ever.” He kissed you in between each word.
“Thanks, I guess you’re not too bad yourself.” You lightly pushed his arm and he chuckled.
“If this paper wasn’t due tomorrow I’d so be sucking your face off right now.” Your jaw dropped as you took his only pillow and hit him with it. He started laughing, trying to defend himself from the pillow attack.
“I gotta go soon, by the way.” You tucked your hair behind your ears while Nate pouted.
“You’re not sleeping over?” He whined like a child.
“Oh, I didn’t know if you wanted me to or not.”
“Of course I want my best girl to stay the night,” he twirled a strand of your hair around his hand. “Plus, I know some pretty fun activities we can do.”
“Freak,” a smirk formed on your lips as you slightly pushed him away while he just laughed. “I have a reward for you if you finish your paper,” you winked at the blonde and you could’ve sworn you had never seen him start furiously typing so fast.
-
Peter had noticed you were absent from the apartment for a while. Well, not completely absent. You would come back to grab a few things, but would never stay longer than three hours. He even stopped by as Spider-Man and your room was always empty.
He wasn’t sure where you had gone, but you’d left a few texts for him, letting him know you were alive and just out and about. Though Peter liked having the place to himself, he’d grown so accustomed to your presence; making breakfast for two, the small talk before heading to bed, or even your music playing a little too loud that he never really minded (you had good music taste, he would just never admit it to your face).
All of his friends were over for a baking and movie night. MJ sat on the couch with her penjamin while Ned excitedly opened the brownie mix box.
“Where’s your roommate?” MJ asked.
“At her friend’s place or maybe the club, I’m not sure.” Peter didn’t want to assume where you were, but Spider-Man could, and he thought you were either on a five-day bender or at your non-boyfriend’s house.
“She seems so fun,” Harry chimed in. “I do love myself a party girl.”
“Dude, that’s my roommate,” Peter rolled his eyes at his playboy friend.
“Is that all she does? she has to do other things— do you think she’s secretly a nerd?” Ned waltzed around the kitchen, grabbing each ingredient to add to this mixing bowl.
“I doubt it. She’s majoring in business or something. All I know is that she wants to be in fashion or music and is horrible at math.”
“Sounds just like my type!” Harry cheered. “You’re so lucky you live with Y/n, she’s so hot.” Peter couldn’t help but feel a sense of pain in his chest after Harry’s comment. Although he knew you were talking to someone, maybe he empathized with you for his friend’s lovesick comments.
“Home!” The door swung open “Oh! Hey guys!” You greeted everyone. There was a chorus of heys as you walked in.
“How are you?” Peter asked.
“Good! Sorry, I’m not staying long. I’m just grabbing a few things then heading out,” you responded as you hurriedly walked past. Peter frowned, allowing himself to be a little sad that he’d be alone for the night yet again.
“Where are you going?” Harry asked as you returned with a tote bag filled with overnight things.
“My friend, Madi’s place. She’s doing my hair tonight,” you said with such ease.
“Wait, your friend cuts your hair?” MJ asked.
“Yeah! I mean, it’s cheaper than going to a salon.”
“Cool.” MJ laid back on the couch and closed her eyes.
“Do you, uh— do you want some brownies? Before you go?” Peter asked but you eyed him suspiciously, darting between him and MJ. “Nothing’s in them, Ned made these.” He sheepishly smiled, scratching the back of his neck.
“Sure! How silly, I was planning on making brownies at Madi’s.” You bit into the brownie but Peter and Ned’s eyes went wide. Your lips pressed into a line. “This was my brownie mix, wasn’t it?”
“I swear I thought Ned bought it a while ago!”
“I thought May dropped it off for Peter!” They both defended themselves while you let out a laugh.
“S’alright. These are really good, Ned, so I'm not upset at all.” you smiled as you finished the brownie. “I gotta go, but I’ll see y’all around.” You waved before leaving the apartment.
“She’s sweet,” Ned commented and Peter just shook his head, his eyes not leaving the door.
“You think she’d be into me?” Harry asked his gaze also toward the door.
“Keep it in your pants, Osborn!” MJ yelled from the couch.

chapter one <- chapter 2
It had been a week and a half since your encounter with New York’s friendly neighborhood hero. Spider-Man wasn’t really on your mind as much as classes had started and you already felt like there was so much to start on. You had also convinced yourself it was just a dream and decided not to tell the rest of your friends.
Knowing you wouldn’t get anything done at home, you ended up at a coffee shop on campus to start on some assignments due this weekend. Though it was never like this before college, the idea of going out on the weekend is what made you stay on top of everything. It might not be the healthiest motivation, but hey, it was something. Music was blaring in your ears as you tuned out the sounds of the rest of the world, allowing the chaos of others around you to create pressure to stay on task, as anyone could see if you were off track.
There was a shadow looming over you that made you pause your music, only to be met face-to-face with your roommate.
“When did you get here?” It came out more rude than you intended, but you were locked in.
“I said hi to you like ten minutes ago, got my drink, and came back. If you want to be alone that’s fine! Sorry, I tried to ask but—“Peter rambled on and on but you put a hand up to stop him.
“No! No, it’s chill,” you reassured him. “Sorry, I get pretty passionate about color-coding my calendar.” Peter softly chuckled at the rainbow of pens scattered around the table as you gestured to your planner.
“Surprised you’re already working so hard this early into the semester.”
“Appreciate it while it lasts. this is how I am for maybe the first month and then burnout happens before Thanksgiving break and then I lock back in by finals.” Peter couldn’t help himself but laugh again. You smiled, admiring the crinkles by his eyes when he laughed and how his brown eyes lit up— in a friendly manner, admiring him, that is.
“So, you going home soon?” It was strange to hear Peter ask if you were going home, knowing he was referring to your shared apartment. You loved having him as a roommate, but it was still so fresh & sometimes he still felt like a stranger.
“Yeah, probably. It’s Friday and knowing my friends, we’re gonna hit up the frats or something.”
“Seems fun. Wanna walk back together?” You nodded and started to pack up your things before exiting the cafè.
“You should come out with us one night,” you suggested. The brunette boy shook his head with a smile.
“I don’t think the frats would like me showing up. Plus I’m not really the ‘going out’ type.” You didn’t respond, instead nodded along.
Within the first few weeks of living with you, Peter had noticed you’re more of the quiet type. Despite having opposite lifestyles, the two of you were similar in other ways; very reserved when speaking about life or allowing the comfortability of silence to take over. It was never awkward between you two, well maybe the first week, but it was just how he liked it later on— comfortable. Though, that never stops him from questioning what your life was really like.
-
You knew it was wrong but, hell, it felt so right. Your hands found their way up to the mop of curly blonde hair as you kissed him. The lights were flashing and music was blaring as your bodies moved together in sync, but it didn’t stop you from being in this moment with him.
“Wanna take this upstairs?” He whispered into your ear sending chills down your spine. You nodded as he took your hand and led you through the crowd up to his room.
This wasn’t the first time you’ve seen him, more like seven months with him, but not truly with him. It was almost like a routine between the two of you on nights like these; you show up at his frat, he saves the best drinks for you and your friends, and you always somehow end up tangled in him. It’s not your proudest moment every time his hands are roaming your body, making it seem like he wants you, but sometimes, it just feels so good.
“Fuck, you’re so hot,” he groaned as he threw you onto his bed, not taking another minute to reconnect his lips with yours. All you did was hum in agreement. “Look so good in that skirt,” he mumbled against your collarbone. Just as his hand was inching up your inner thigh, a phone started ringing.
“Shit— Nate, I’m so sorry. Just give me one sec,” you pulled away from him and he rolled onto the bed and laid down next to you as you answered the call. He left wet kisses on your inner thigh and you played with his hair while talking to your friend. After the call, you threw your phone onto the bed and laid back, allowing the pillows to engulf you.
“Everything alright?” He asked, his voice tender.
“I gotta go— Madi’s fucked up.” Nate pouted and tried to kiss you to stay, but you shook your head and pushed him away. “I’m so drunk that if you do that I might actually stay.”
“Maybe that’s the plan,” he nuzzled his head into your neck & wrapped his arms around your waist. It was moments like this that made you want to stay around, that made every memory between the two of you worth it despite the loneliness you felt around him. “Hey, take one more shot with me? Before you go?” He took out a bottle of soju. you playfully rolled your eyes before taking the bottle from him.
“You know I can’t say no to this shit,” you giggled as you took a swig from it.
“We still on for Monday?” Nate asked. butterflies erupted in your stomach as they always do when you get to see him outside of a party setting.
“Yeah! Wait, what’s Monday again?” Your words slurred together as you stared into his green eyes.
“I need help on a paper.” Those butterflies died in your stomach.
“Right… yeah. Just text me,” You gathered your things and tied your converse. He slipped off the bed and grabbed your face, kissing you one last time.
“I’ll see ya.” That was all Nate said.
Those three words haunted you on the way back to everyone’s apartments. There was no sympathy for your friends or concern if you would get home safe. You felt that last shot of soju really hit as you stumbled into your apartment. Mumbling a few curse words, you hoped & prayed you didn’t wake up Peter.
Not having the energy, you kicked off your sneakers and fell onto your bed, telling yourself you’ll get ready to sleep soon. The world was still spinning even when you closed your eyes to let the darkness take over. You started to think about everything between you and Nate, if there would ever be you and him.
Tap, tap, tap
Your eyebrows furrowed together, but you brushed off the sound, assuming it was just your drunken state of mind. The tapping got louder and it was starting to give you a headache. Giving in to the noises, you slowly got up and turned towards the window.

chapter one -> chapter two
You put the finishing touches on your makeup, giving yourself one last look in the mirror to approve your appearance. Slipping into a mini black dress, you paired it with black knee-high boots and grabbed your oversized jean jacket. Checking the pockets to make sure you had everything, you turned off the lights in your room and headed out.
“I’m going out tonight, Peter!” you told your roommate as you walked toward the front door, passing the living room. He and his friends were having a movie night, most of them focused on the screen.
“Okay, be safe,” he said, not taking his eyes off the movie.
“I’ll share my location with you.” You opened your phone to the Find My Friends app, hitting the 'Share Until the End of Day' feature with Peter.
“Sounds good,” Peter responded, feeling bad if he didn’t say anything. You glanced back one last time before heading out, hearing one of his friends ask, “Who was that?” as you left.
You had just moved into this new apartment about three weeks ago, right before the start of a new school year. Last semester, your previous roommate decided to drop out of school and move back home, leaving you both roommate-less and homeless. One of your friends had told you about Peter and how he was looking for a roommate since his apartment was getting a bit pricey for him. After a few weeks of getting to know each other, it seemed like you both would be a great fit as roommates, even though you were quite the opposite of each other.
You had fallen in love with the nightlife of New York during your first year of college, never turning down the chance to go out and party. Meanwhile, your roommate, Peter, stayed in more often or had work. Actually, you didn’t know much about him; tonight was the first time you had seen him with his friends. You felt bad because you had already had a few sleepovers with your best friend to break in the new place.
Locking up the door behind you, you made your way out into the city that never sleeps and to your friend’s apartment to pregame.
-
The night was still young, but you were a shot too deep. Stumbling along the sidewalk, your friends helped guide you home. It was definitely one way to kick off the new school year.
“Are you sure you’ll be okay?” your best friend, Kiara, asked. You nodded and hugged her in thanks as she helped you up to your floor.
The jingle of your keys echoed softly through the hallway, but you made sure to unlock the door quietly in case Peter was awake. The main lights were off, leaving the kitchen dimly lit by the glow of the cabinet underlights. On the counter, something caught your eye—a glass of water, a couple of painkillers, and a sticky note.
Hope ur not too drunk! Drink this and take some painkillers before u sleep. Trust. — Peter :P
You smiled to yourself, fiddling with the corner of the note. Taking the painkillers, you downed the water and already started to feel a little better. Back in your room, you stuck the sticky note on your wall, adding it to a collage of film pictures, posters, and other notes from friends.
After rushing through your night routine, you finally crawled into your cozy bed, turned on your heated blanket, and fell asleep in seconds.
-
Thump!
You jolted awake at the sound of something hitting the wooden floor. Heart pounding, you grabbed your phone and turned on the flashlight—only to find yourself staring at someone dressed in red spandex lying on your floor.
“...Ow,” the stranger groaned.
Frozen in place, you weren’t sure what to do. The masked figure sat up, glancing around your room, taking in the pink sheets and fairy lights.
“Um... Spider-Man?” you whispered, your voice barely audible.
“Sorry, miss. I, uh, must’ve made a—ow—mistake,” he mumbled, his voice low.
Your flashlight moved lower, revealing rips in his suit and blood gushing out of his side.
“Oh my God! Oh my God!” you panicked, stumbling out of bed and helping him prop himself against it. “Let me grab the first-aid kit!”
“No, it’s okay. Just... just give me a minute,” Spider-Man tried to reassure you, but by the time he glanced up, your door was wide open, your bed empty.
Moments later, you returned with the kit and some towels. “Okay, here we go. I’m not an expert or anything, but—wow, that’s a lot of blood. Um...” You fumbled with an alcohol swab and started cleaning his wound.
Spider-Man winced, small groans escaping as you worked. Trying not to freak out, you avoided looking directly at the blood.
“Here—just, um—” He grabbed your hand, pressing it and the towel against his side. “Apply pressure. That should stop the bleeding.”
“Got it,” you whispered, focusing intently.
“How’s your night going?” he asked, his voice lighter now despite the pain.
“It’s... alright. Drank a little more than I should’ve, but my roommate is the sweetest—he left water and Advil for me. Definitely had a night.”
“I can tell,” he chuckled, “by the smudged mascara.” Your face flushed with embarrassment as you let your hair fall forward to hide it. Spider-Man reached out, gently tucking your hair behind your ear.“Sorry—not in a bad way. You still look beautiful.”
“Oh, um, thanks,” you stammered, caught off guard. “You’re, uh, pretty cool too. I think. I mean, you probably are, but I’ve only known you for, like, an hour—so I’m gonna stop talking now.”
“You’re cute when you ramble,” he chuckled, ruffling your hair.
After bandaging him up, Spider-Man stood, steadying himself. “This has been fun,” he said, stepping toward the window. “i’m gonna go now, it was nice meeting you…”
“y/n,” you finished his sentence. he repeated your name under his breath, hearing how it sounds from his mouth. He thanked you once again for fixing him up.
“Will I see you again, Spidey?” you asked as he hesitated on the fire escape. He paused, the mask hiding his expression.
“Anything for you, beautiful. Goodnight.” And with that, he swung into the night, disappearing into the darkness. You curled back into bed, unsure if the night’s events were real, and drifted into a dreamless sleep.
The morning sun woke you, and to your relief, you didn’t have a hangover. Slipping into your slippers and university hoodie, you headed to the kitchen.
“Morning,” Peter greeted you.
“Good morning,” you replied, grabbing iced coffee from the fridge. You mixed it with creamer and ice, savoring the start of your day. “I had the weirdest night.”
“Oh yeah?” Peter raised an eyebrow as he served you a plate of eggs.
“Yeah. I might’ve been way too drunk... or Spider-Man paid me a visit last night.” You thought you heard Peter choke on his coffee, but you were too focused on your plate to notice.
“Must’ve been a wild night,” he said.
“Yeah... for sure,” you replied, unsure how to interpret his reaction.
The rest of the morning passed in small talk—shows Peter was watching, what you and your friends did last night. But as the day went on, you couldn’t shake the thought of the masked hero.

"it'll be a wednesday & i'll be going into this coffee shop"
can u tell i have a coffee addiction
Peter groaned when he accidentally spilled an iced coffee behind the counter. He grabbed paper towels to clean up the majority of the beverage on the floor before grabbing a mop to clean up the rest of the area. The bell above the door rang and Peter mentally sighed. His morning wasn’t off to the best start; a spilled coffee, ten minutes late to his shift, and now it felt like a morning rush.
“Hi, welcome in,” his voice trailed off once his eyes landed on you. You smiled acknowledging him before reading their menu.
He patiently waited by the register for when you were ready but couldn’t help but stare; at how your head was slightly tilted to the side causing your hair to fall over your shoulders, messing with the case on your phone, popping it in and out of its place. Peter ignored the other customers who had walked in shortly after you, taking their orders on autopilot. He watched as your eyes lit up when you read their seasonal drink special and walked a few steps forward, your eyes still locked on the menu so you knew you couldn’t mess up your order.
“What can I get started for you?” Peter followed his unofficial official script.
“Uh, hi! Could I get a medium iced Nutella latte, please?” Your voice was hypnotic to the brunette boy. He thought he could listen to you talk all day for the rest of his life.
“And what’s the name?” He took out a Sharpie and wrote down ‘16 oz. iced Nutella’ on the plastic cup.
“Y/n.” He smiled at the name as you watched him write it down, even smiling to yourself when he spelled it correctly.
“Alright, Y/n. I’ll have that right out for you.” He walked away after you paid and you found a table off to the side to sit at while you waited.
This was your first time in this coffee shop, and you are still trying out new places. You took the whole place in; the warm fairy lights hung around the building, the cream-colored walls with local artists’ paintings, couches in the corner with games on a coffee table for others to play.
Peter called out your name, a small blush crept onto his cheeks when he saw you walking towards him. He knew it meant nothing, you were just another customer. But oh how he wanted to see you shyly walk toward him with a smile on your face every day.
“Thank you…” your voice trailed off, eyes scanning anywhere for a name tag.
“Peter!” He beamed.
“Thank you, Peter,” you smiled at him one last time before grabbing a straw and walking away. “Have a nice day!” You yelled as you walked out the door, causing butterflies to stir in Peter’s stomach.
His day just got so much better.
– – –
It had been a week since you had walked into Peter’s coffee shop. He had lost hope that you would ever show again making up scenarios on why you never came back, but he knew this was delusion at its finest.
It was early afternoon and the morning rush had finally died down. Peter was in the middle of making a matcha when he heard the bell ring. He looked up for a quick second and caught a glimpse of your hair.
“Uhhh matcha for… Ashley!” Peter’s eyes flickered between the drink in his hands and you, barely able to read the name.
“Thanks, cutie,” a blonde girl walked up to Peter, winking at him as she took her drink out of his hands, fingers slightly brushing up against each other. Peter’s ears turned pink at the nickname, giving her a polite smile.
“You’re welcome.”
“So, when are you off? I’d love to get to know you more.” Ashley was eyeing Peter up and down while he shifted uncomfortably.
“I’m not so sure, just, you know… whenever?” The blonde girl gave Peter a weird look.
“Alright, well, I’ll see you around, handsome.” Ashley spun on her heel and walked out, the bell ringing above her. Peter exhaled and wiped away sweat he didn’t even know was there.
“So, are you that bad at flirting or are you too nice to tell someone you’re taken?” You asked Peter once he was in front of you. His face turned red, smiling & looking down at his shoes to hide his face.
“I- uh- just wasn’t interested.”
“So, bad at flirting.” You smirked at the brown-eyed boy noticing how red his face was getting from, what you assumed was, embarrassment.
“Yeah, yeah,” he playfully rolled his eyes and you giggled. “So, what can I get for you today?”
“An iced Nutella latte, please!” Peter’s face lit up as he recognized your order from last time.
“Medium?”
“Yes, please.”
“And what was the name?” It was Y/n. Peter already knew because that name had been ringing in his head for the last seven days. He wrote it down as you responded to him, doodling a little smiley face next to it.
Peter quickly got started on making your drink, looking back at you now and then. You looked up from your phone when he called your name, walking towards the boy with a smile on your face.
“Thank you so much, Peter!” You exclaimed while his ears turned pink when you remembered his name.
“Y-You’re welcome, Y/n.” Peter grinned, noticing you remembered his name. He watched you walk away, but you quickly turned to face him.
“Oh also,” you started and Peter leaned in. “How late are you guys open?”
“Are you flirting with me?” You let out a laugh at his response.
“No, you’d know if I was flirting with you,” you smirked at him. Though he hates to admit it, his heart broke a little when you confirmed you were not. “I just love the atmosphere here. It’s great for studying.” You continued to smile at the boy.
“We’re open till midnight.”
“Really?! Why so late?” Peter shrugged.
“I’ve never really thought about it. I’m guessing it’s cause we’re in a college town, which gives students a nice place to study and do group projects.”
“Cool. Well, I’ll see you around, Peter.” You winked at him before walking away and his cheeks flushed pink.
– – –
The next couple of weeks, you came into the coffee shop often. Conveniently, Peter had been working most of the time you came. He had your order memorized like the back of his hand, but sometimes you would take him by surprise and order a muffin or a bagel.
The bell rang and he smiled when he saw you walk in. It was his favorite part of all of his shifts. Sure, he had a few regulars that he loved talking to, but the small talk between the two of you has slowly made its way to one of the favorite things he looks forward to nearly every day.
“Good afternoon, Miss Y/n!” Peter beamed.
“Hello!” You smiled brightly at him, pulling at the sleeves of your sweater.
“The usual?”
“Yes, please.” Peter put in your order, doodling another smiley next to your name on the cup. He took you in as you tapped your phone on the card reader.
“I like your outfit.” He complimented. It wasn’t anything much, just an oversized cream-knitted sweater with a short denim skirt paired with brown high-top Converse. You shyly smiled and tucked a piece of your hair behind your ear, a small blush painted across your cheeks.
“Thanks. This skirt just came in the mail today, I hope it isn’t too short.” You pulled it down a little even though your backpack was hung low enough to hide anything.
“It’s cute, I love it.” Peter smiled as he continued to stare at you. He started to think about how if he finally had the balls to just ask for your number. The outfit you would wear if he took you out on a date during this fall season like for a pumpkin patch or even a haunted house. Would you lean into him when you cold—
“So… my drink?” You asked, snapping him out of his daze.
“Oh! Right, right. Uh, I’ll get started on it.” You giggled at how flustered Peter was when he almost dropped the empty cup.
“You are fucking delusional,” Peter mumbled to himself as he made your drink.
You found a table near a window to get started on some homework. You set up your computer and notebook, put on headphones, and started on your homework. Indulged in your work, you didn’t hear your name being called and practically jumped out of your seat when Peter tapped you on the shoulder.
“Holy shit you scared the crap out of me,” you exclaimed. Peter laughed and set your drink down.
“Next time, maybe don’t be blasting Red by Taylor Swift.” Your face flushed as red as the cover of the album.
“How did you…?”
“I could hear it. You know, you can destroy your eardrums by playing music that loudly.”
“And you know I simply do not care.” You smiled smugly at the boy and he just laughed.
“Yeah, yeah. Talk to me when you’re wearing hearing aids at 40.” You playfully rolled your eyes at the smirk plastered on his face. “Enjoy your latte!” When he walked away, yelled back at you leaving you a smiling mess.
A few hours had gone by and you were still hunched over your homework. A yawn escaped your mouth causing you to drop your pen, laying your head on your arms on the table. You felt someone nudge your arm so you looked up only to be met with chocolate brown eyes. You took off your headphones and gave him a confused look.
“Here, on the house.” Peter handed you a coffee cake muffin and you couldn’t help but feel butterflies in your stomach. Or maybe it was the hunger.
“How’d you know this one is my favorite?”
“You’ve ordered it a few times,” Peter scratched the back of his neck and shrugged. “You just looked like you needed something.”
“Are you saying I look bad right now?” You raised an eyebrow and his eyes widened.
“No! No, no. Not at all. I mean like you just— I mean you were falling asleep and—“ You laughed and he joined in with you. “I just thought it would help you focus on… whatever you’re doing.” He took a quick look at your work, all the scribbles and numbers in your notebook looked like a foreign language to him which took him by surprise because whatever had numbers involved, he normally understood.
“Thanks, it’s very much appreciated.” You took a bite from the muffin, relaxing a bit.
“It’s no problem. What have you been working on? It’s Friday, shouldn’t you be having fun tonight?” He wiggled his eyebrows in an attempt to lighten the mood but you just rolled your eyes.
“Bro don’t even get me started. It’s my accounting homework. We have an exam coming up and I need to finish this if I wanna go out tonight.” You looked at your work and shuddered. Just the sight of it was repulsing to you.
“You’re in accounting? You don’t strike me as a finance man— uh woman.” You let out a dry chuckle and shook your head.
“Correct. I’m not. I’m in business marketing, but one of the required classes to even get into the business school is accounting. It’s absolute death.”
“What do you want to do with your marketing degree?” Peter asked, taking the seat across from you.
“I’m not really sure yet, the field is so broad. I just like making things pretty.”
“I can see that,” Peter gestured to your notes filled with colorful pens. You giggled and shook your head.
“It just helps me understand what’s going into which account, that’s all. But in all honesty, with my degree, I think it would be so fun to work in social media or the fashion industry. Ooh! Or maybe even do the marketing for a tour for like Taylor Swift or something. That would be everything.” Peter listened to you intently and you felt yourself become a little shy of the attention.
The two of you ended up talking for a while, finding out where he goes to school and what he’s studying for. You’ve always loved your small talks with the cute barista, but this was another level. You admired how he looked with the sun hitting his brown curls perfectly while it was setting. He looked unreal but in a good way.
“Wait, aren’t you supposed to be working?” You glanced at the clock and noticed you had been sitting and chatting for thirty minutes. His ears turned pink and he looked down at his hands.
“I actually clocked out when I gave you your muffin.” He sheepishly smiled at you and all you could do was smile.
“And you are so, so sweet for that. Thank you so much! But don’t you want to go home? I feel so bad, I’m sure you’re tired. I don’t want to keep you away from anything.” Peter’s heart warmed at how thoughtful you were of his time, but he felt bad that you felt bad
“No! You’re not keeping me from anything, I promise. This was really nice.” He gave you a reassuring smile.
“Oh good, good. Well, I was thinking of heading out because looking at my notes is giving me a headache and I think I would rather die than look at any of this anymore today.”
“We can, um, walk out together? If you want to, that is, unless you have somewhere to go then–”
“Yeah! Yeah, no I would like that. And there’s less of a chance of me being kidnapped with a cute guy walking with me.” You bit back a laugh as you watched Peter’s face turn red. Once you had packed up all your stuff, the two of you headed out the door into the chilly autumn evening.
“Do you guys have fall break coming up?” You asked, pulling at the sleeves of your sweater.
“Yeah, I think it’s next week.” Peter had no idea what to do. What do you mean he’s walking with his crush, specifically, seeing her outside his work? He just stuffed his hands in his pockets and ignored the desire to hold your hand.
“Same! Are you doing anything fun?”
“Not sure, probably just gonna go home and spend time with my aunt. I’ve been so busy with work and school I haven’t had a lot of time to swing by.” No pun intended, Peter thought to himself.
“Oh, that’s so sweet. So, you’re from around here?”
“Yeah! Are you?” You were about to respond until you saw a familiar face running towards you.
“Y/n! Oh my god! Hey!” It was one of your suitemates, Sophia. The two of you hugged while Peter just stood awkwardly to the side. “Did you see my text?”
“Ugh, no. I’m so sorry! I had been studying all day.” You pulled out your phone to find her text.
“It’s all good! Well, our favorite frat is throwing a party tonight. We’re all gonna go get ready right now.”
“Oh my god! I neeeeed to go!” You smirked at Sophia. Peter watched the entire interaction, just smiling and nodding his head. “Oh! This is Peter. Peter, this is my suitemate, Sophia.”
“Nice to meet you,” Peter reached his arm out and they shook hands.
“Is this the cute–” Sophia started but you smacked her arm to stop, sending her a glare.
“Thanks for walking with me, Peter. We gotta go, though. I’ll see you soon?”
“Yes! Yeah, I’ll see you soon, Y/n.” You bit back a smile and waved goodbye to him. Peter watched as you and Sophia walked away, smiling a bit until he realized: he didn’t even ask for your number.

Peter was working another afternoon shift, which he didn’t mind at all. He was still a little upset that he didn’t get your number, so he made himself an iced Nutella latte so he could wallow in his sadness over the greatest fumble of his life. The bell rang but Peter ignored it, popping a lid over the plastic cup and grabbing a straw.
“Peter?” He recognized that angelic voice anywhere. Turning around, he saw you fidgeting with your hands at the register. Your hair was thrown up in a messy bun, wearing sweatpants and a t-shirt with black sunglasses on.
“Hey!” He put the drink down before he had even gotten a sip and ran up to the register.
“I have the worst hangover ever,” your voice barely above a whisper. Peter quickly slid over the latte he made for himself to you.
“On the house, because you look like you need it,” Peter bit back a smirk. It was hard to see your expression with those big sunglasses on, but he could imagine you rolling your eyes by the way you bit your lips to hold back a smile.
“You are an angel sent from heaven,” you praised the boy, drinking the smooth, sugary liquid.
“So I’m guessing you had fun last night?” Peter wiggled his eyebrows at you.
“I fear I become a whole other person when drinking Pink Whitney.”
“Damn, what happened?”
“I don’t even remember, I blacked. I guess I made out with one of the frat guys, according to my friends. Oh, and I threw a drink in someone’s face. I don’t know.” Peter was unsure of how to respond. He wasn’t a huge party person so he couldn’t really relate to any drinking experiences, but he also didn’t know how to respond to you making out with a guy.
“Is this the reason why that’s your ‘favorite frat?’” Peter asked, using his fingers as quotations to quote Sophie from yesterday. You let out a dry chuckle and shook your head.
“It’s our favorite because the guys in it are actually the most stupid people I’ve ever met. I mean, last night, they literally set up a slip ‘n slide down their stairs. It’s so fun to watch,” you swirled your coffee with the straw, reminiscing moments from last night. “You should come with us next time!”
“Oh, I don’t know. I’m not really a ‘party’ person,” Peter avoided your eye contact while your lips formed a line. “But,” Peter’s tone changed. “Maybe I’ll go, just for you.” Your face lit up, nodding in silent confirmation of those unofficial plans.
“When are you off?”
“Are you flirting with me, Y/n?”
“Maybe,” you said, your voice was airy. Like clockwork, Peter’s face turned red and you just smirked at him.
“I’m off in fifteen. If you wanna wait, we can, uh, you know, walk–”
“Yeah! I’m down,” you smiled at the boy before walking away to sit at your usual table, waiting for the cute barista.
And that’s how the next few weeks were. You would get your coffee and sometimes Peter would give it to you for free (those were automatically your favorite days), you would wait for him to get off work, and then the two of you would walk home together. Peter would tell himself every day that it was the day he would finally get your number, but one of you always had something urgent to get to once you had to go your separate ways. Last week, your suitemate’s cat ran away. A few days ago, Peter had a Spidey emergency where he just ran off.
You would be lying to yourself if you said you weren’t waiting for Peter to finally ask you out. He consumed your mind, despite you never hanging out outside of the coffee shop. The two of you talked about your schools, the classes you were taking, and just random stories on your walks home. He would even help you with your accounting homework while he was on break or if it was slow. He was so endearing and kind to you, but you were waiting for him to make the first move.
But soon, those weeks turned cold fast. You hadn’t shown up at his coffee shop in a week and a half. Peter was starting to worry that you died or something, searching for you while on patrol and mindlessly staring out the window, hoping you would walk in.

It was a cold, winter day. Peter made himself a hot chocolate to wallow himself in his sorrows after not seeing you for so long. He was starting to beat himself up for never asking for your number, in fear that he wouldn’t ever see you again. He didn’t even know your last name to search for you on Instagram.
Christmas had passed and the new year had already begun. He had all these daydreams about the two of you spending the holidays together, but you never showed. He started to think that maybe you found a new barista to flirt with and you and your new boyfriend had babies together already.
Even Peter’s coworkers had noticed his mood drop. When you started to go to their coffee shop frequently, his entire personality was a lot brighter. He smiled more and hummed while making everyone’s drinks. But now, he would just stare out the window, grieving the loss of what never even began.
Peter drank his hot chocolate while watching the snow fall outside from behind the counter. Some buildings still had their Christmas lights up, making the city feel more homey than ever.
“Welcome in,” Peter mindlessly announced when he heard the bell ring. He hadn’t bothered looking over, assuming one of his coworkers would take over the register.
“Wow, I’m gone for like a month and that’s all I get?” Peter whipped his head around so fast he could have gotten whiplash.
“Y/n!” He ran around the corner to hug you and you wrapped your arms around his neck, smiling into the hug. “Where have you been?”
“Missed me that much, pretty boy?” You laughed as he playfully rolled his eyes to hide his blush. Peter walked behind the counter again so he could take your order, but he took you in. You were wearing a maroon beanie and a white winter coat over your big knitted sweater.
“Aren’t you cold?” He referred to your ripped jeans.
“Not really,” you just shrugged.
“The usual?”
“Yes, please!”
“You still want it iced?” Peter raised an eyebrow at you and you nodded your head.
“Yes, oh my god. I’ve been craving this drink for the last month!”
“You’re crazy to want an iced drink in this weather.”
“Call me whatever you want, but I’m feening for this drink.” Peter laughed at you when you took out your card, prepared to pay.
“So, where have you been?”
“Oh! I went home for break.” You said it so nonchalantly like you didn’t leave Peter alone and depressed for the last month.
“You’re not from around here?” He questioned you.
“No. I could’ve sworn I told you I was gonna be gone. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you!” You pursed your lip out and Peter just gave you a sad smile.
“It’s okay, not like I missed my favorite person or anything.” Your eyes widened and you could’ve sworn you heard him chuckle when he walked away to make your drink.
As Peter was making your latte, he knew he couldn’t risk going no contact with you again. He grabbed a Sharpie from the register and quickly wrote down his number next to your name, hoping you would notice.
“Y/n!” He called out. You smiled at him as you were walking up, grabbing the drink from the counter.
“Thank you! I gotta go, I already have assignments to start on. I’ll see you soon, yeah?”
“Yeah, yeah! See you later, Y/n.” He waved and smiled at you. You gave him one last wave as you walked out the door, your back pushing it open.
Peter went the rest of his shift high on adrenaline, making the best drinks he’s probably made since the first day you walked into the coffee shop. He clocked out and grabbed his backpack, walking out into the cold. He felt his phone buzz from his coat pocket, taking it out to see it.
hey pretty boy :)
Peter was smiling and giggling the rest of his walk home.
