my name is eden and i’m trans. i use he/him pronouns and would like to start hrt (testosterone), but my family is unsupportive of my “decision” and believes transness is a choice to the point where they tell me they will not have contact with me if i transition. i am 17 years old and turn 18 in about 6 months. at this point, i will be moving out and hopefully starting hrt. i live in illinois, which means that transition-related healthcare would normally be covered under insurance. however, cost is a factor since my parents are not letting me use their insurance to pay for my transition. i therefore have to pay entirely out of pocket. as im 17 and have to do all of this behind my parents’ back, i cannot yet set up appointments with planned parenthood or with an endocrinologist, but i will nearing my 18th birthday. i have a job, but my funds go directly into a joint account with my parents. i hope to withdraw all of my money when i turn 18 and open a new account, but until then, i have to save up as much as possible because my job money will go towards food, college, etc. when i move out. im estimating that hormones + clinic visits will cost in the low to mid-hundreds
