So I have officially hit a milestone: 1 million words of writing about James Potter and Sirius Black falling in love (again and again).

There's just something about them. The devotion. The bond that's deeper than blood. The way they would tear the world apart for each other, or let the whole world burn if it meant staying together. The way they get so lost in each other that everything else disappears. The way they become each other's homes. A love so all-consuming it feels almost fatal.

A million words later, I'm still not finished with them.

the morning after

Actual story, following up right after their first night together. And Remus continues to be very relatable!😅

Also, a little backstory that we definitely planned from the very beginning and absolutely didn't just make up now:

Remus stole the pink mug from his first publisher as petty revenge against his editor, Dolores Umbridge. She had it out for him from the start, making him rewrite sections over and over again. His debut novel (a magical realism story that used werewolves as a metaphor for class and disability) didn't sit well with the conservative, pro-government Umbridge. She insisted that he rewrite the entire thing as a romantasy instead. Remus refused. In retaliation, Umbridge made sure the book's release was as low-key as possible, with virtually no advertising. She even changed the cover to resemble a cheesy YA romance, practically guaranteeing that readers' expectations wouldn't match the actual story. The novel was doomed to be a major financial flop.

But he also,

Throws fits when things don't go his way. Not a "I'm a bad bitch" destroying everything-type fit, but tossing a trash can, breaking a screen-type fit.

Cries. A lot.

Pleads. He begs.

Doesn't answer the call to action.

Shows weakness. Being a coward and being fearful are two things he defines himself with.

Doesn't end up with the girl. In fact, that girl isn't even interested and he isn't, either.

Cherishes friendship over a romantic plot or something stereotypically brave like, "I'm going to save Rocky so I can save his world." No, he wants to save his friend, first and foremost.

Squeaks. He squeals. He screams, loudly and very high pitched. He whines. He complains. He physically struggles to open a jar. He's clumsy as hell. He makes some of the least graceful noises one can make.

Is not afraid to be the primitive species lowkey.

It's a lot harder to control this strange, new magic inside of him than James though it would be.

More than once he has managed to set his own sleeve on fire while trying to create a flame. Things have smacked him in the face when he tried to summon them towards him, much to Sirius' amusement.

But it's not all made out of embarrassments for him. James leans fast how to create and hold a shielding charm – again, much to Sirius' amusement.

“That's how you know it's my magic,” he says with a smirk. “Shielding yourself is not something that comes naturally to you.”

He's not completely wrong about that. Something that comes far more naturally to James are romantic gestures. So he practices. There is a lot of time for that on the road.

It's not a true surprise to him that it doesn't take forever for him to get it right. Still, he's giddy to show Sirius.

The sun slowly dips below the horizon. Their camp is all set up. Nimbus is nibbling on sweet spring grass.

James plucks a bud off a nearby tree and sits cross-legged down in front of Sirius.

He cups the bud between his hands. Slowly, the petals unfurl and the blossom blooms between his fingers. Very proud of himself, James raises the small flower and secures it behind Sirius' ear.

The blush on Sirius' cheeks is very bright in the light of the setting sun. “Show-off,” he grumbles, but nonetheless pulls James into a well-deserved kiss.
