feet drag her back to the counter where her brother is, leaning on it to write out the note to their mother. she stops somewhere mid-sentence to finally look up at him. it’s then that she throws down the pen, leaning all of her weight against surface. ‘ like it even matters to you. ‘ is her response and she wants to stop there. she wants to throw in the towel and forget any of this ever happened. that was the problem, she couldn’t. she couldn’t just turn her mind off and forget every single time he risked his own life. she couldn’t forget every time he had forgotten about her in doing so. every time he almost abandoned her. so instead of stopping there and keeping her mouth shut, she shakes her head and continues. ‘ you know, i sit by my window every night wondering if my big brother is coming home. i have a choice of whether or not to help the pack and i choose not to more often than not. but that’s not because i don’t want to, you know i do. i don’t help out so often, because i know what it’s going to be like for you and mom if i don’t come home one night. i’m not selfish. then there’s you. you spend so much time trying to save everybody else that you seem to forget that you have a sister who needs you alive. someone who can’t bare to lose you. you never think about what would happen to me, who i would become if i didn’t have you by my side. i was there that night, scott. i saw what you did to yourself. you almost didn’t heal. it was just another night of what if’s and i can’t stand you for it. i almost lost my brother that night and you couldn’t care less what that would do to me. so yeah, i’m pissed off. maybe i’m the one who’s being selfish, but i don’t care. i hate you. ‘

things had been quiet between them since the battle to end all battles, or at least on her part. she’s been mad at her brother, without even as much as a word to tell him why. so as she strolls into the kitchen sporting a pair of shorts and a halfway zipped up hoodie, she ignores him. feet drag her over to the fridge as she puts her earbuds in, turning up the volume on her phone’s playlist. she quickly grabs a water before kicking the door shut and turning to walk by him again. it’s then that she remembers that there’s something that needs to be said, tugging on the left earbud to yank it from her ear. ‘ mom should be up for her shift in a few minutes. tell her i went for an early morning run with liam. ‘ a click of her tongue and squint of the eyes before making her way over to the notepad by the phone. ‘ nevermind, i’ll leave her a note. can’t trust that you’ll even remember i said anything to you. ‘
his eyes leave hers just long enough to gauge the wound at her chest, doing his best not to let the fear show on his face. it’s bad, but she knows that. it wouldn’t have worried him had it not been laced with wolfsbane, had they not been one step ahead. ❛hey, don’t talk like that.❜ he grasps her hand with his free one, the pad of his thumb catching the tears falling down her cheek. ❛i’m not going anywhere, and neither are you. keep your eyes open, okay? look at me.❜ stay with me, please. losing her isn’t an option, but his hands begin to shake just thinking about it. the hand at her cheek moves to the bleeding gunshot wound at her chest, gentle fingers trying to find a way to fix this. he’s afraid to touch her, but he has to do something. he can’t let her die, not here. not after everything they’d been too. he still had so much to show her. his grip tightens, doing his best to take any pain she’s feeling. ❛i’m sorry you didn’t get to go to paris, i promise that i’ll get you there. you have to stay with me.❜
she doesn’t know what does it. what changes her mind about everything in that moment. it might have been the look in scott’s eyes, or the way he was talking. it might have even been his promise to take her to paris. no matter what the reason behind it, it has her shaking her head instantly. ‘ i’m not━ ‘ her hands tug at her jacket, trying to push it back, silently begging scott to help her take it off. ‘ ━ i’m not d-dying here. ‘ she repeats the words from just a few weeks ago in the armory. she still had so much to see, so much to do. she’s almost nineteen, hasn’t even lived her life yet. she didn’t even get her life with him, yet. ‘ don’t let me die here. ‘ she pleads with him as more tears fall.
shifting would trigger healing, but she can’t risk her body healing itself around a wolfsbane dipped bullet. it would leave the poison in her bloodstream, doing even more damage in the end. so she can’t shift, not unless she risks it all, risks her life. it’s a chance she has to take to make it out of this alive, but it just might kill her quicker. it’s after she successfully gets the jacket off that she’s looking at him, but there’s no time to explain her plan. not unless she wants to die before she sees it through, however crazy it may seem.
tear filled eyes lock with his, trying to catch her breath. ‘ i-i have a plan. it m-might not work. it━ it could kill me quicker than waiting it o-out. b-but i have to try. ‘ she stares at him for what seems like forever, lips parting again to continue. ‘ scott━━ i love you. ‘ it’s the first time the words ever leave her mouth and she’s well aware it may be the last time they do. she gives him no time to react before eyes glow blue in her shift, claws extending. one wrong move of the bullet and she’s dead, but it doesn’t stop her from digging in to the wound in search of it. head falls backwards as eyes close, a loud gasp for air sounding from her as she digs deeper. one wrong move, just one.

‘ actually, that’s not exactly true. ‘ he admits, taking a single step back for space. ‘ they found me. i just got away. ‘

he shakes his head, hands balling into fists at his side. this was cruel. he’d thought he’d accepted her death, moved past the pain that it brought him. but he feels that pressure in his chest again, his lungs void of the air it desperately needs. he needed to see her, needed to see if she was real. BUT SHE WASN’T. he knew that. he knew that, didn’t he? but she wasn’t asking him to open his eyes. she wasn’t asking him to give in. she was asking him to fight. he’s willing himself to turn, the confusion leaving him dizzy, when something crashes into him. he gasps, hands reaching out with every intent to push away the predator. but her touch is gentle, kind. he finally takes the breath his lungs had been begging for, and the metallic smell invades his senses. blood. defensive hands soften, though his fingers still tremble, as they reach forward to touch her. one hand rises to lay over her own, the other finding the contour of her jaw. though his eyes are closed, they sting with unshed tears that threaten to break through. ❛h-how are you here? you’re bleeding, why are you bleeding?❜ if he could just open his eyes… ❛i’ve missed you so much.❜ it comes as a tentative whisper, not quite sure if he completely trusts her. but she deserved to know, real or not. she had to know.
she can’t help the smallest of a smile that tugs at her lips at his touch, at his words. it’s not like he can see it and maybe right now that’s a good thing. she chooses not to answer the question at hand━ why she was bleeding. it’s not something she feels he needs to know. at least not right this second. right now was about keeping the fight blind. that’s what mattered most. protecting him, protecting the pack. she would do what ever was necessary to ensure their safety. ‘ i know, ‘ hand half turns to curl her fingers around his own hand, giving it a gentle squeeze, ‘ but i’m here now and that’s all that matters. ‘ it’s no surprise that the anuk-ite steals her face ( and voice to match ), but it might just be the blessing she needs to convince him she’s real. she hears the demon pleading its case for him to open his eyes, that he did this to her, but she takes it upon herself to talk over it. ‘ don’t listen to it. It’s the anuk-ite. come on, don’t open your eyes. scott, there’s only one anuk-ite now, both faces merged. so there can only be one of me at a time. but there’s two. ‘ maybe for once, and only once, the fear filled illusion was a good thing. ‘ please, tell me you believe me now, scott. i’m real. ‘

every bullet that ricocheted from the cement at his back had him jumping, nerves on edge as he coiled into himself as a means to avoid getting hit. he’s useless standing here, but there’s nowhere else to turn. bullets fly past him in an angry array. he tries to locate the others, turning his head to seek them out. her name leaves his lips before he’s even aware of it, calling out for her, hoping that she’ll answer. when she doesn’t, he listens for her heartbeat. it’s quick, but so is his. it’s erratic, but so is his. there’s something else there, though. something that he can’t place, but it sets his own heart racing. he needs to find her. he’s running in a matter of seconds, ducking behind anything he can find to keep from getting hit. he may have been grazed, but it doesn’t phase him. he’ll heal. he needs to know that she’s okay. the closer he gets, the more anxious he becomes. he can smell blood, wolfsbane. ❛malia!❜ he calls for her again, wide eyes honing in on her as she lays against the wall. he’s crouching to get to her, falling to his knees. ❛what happened? where’d you get hit?❜ despite the chaos that surrounds them, his voice is small as he leans over her. one hand rises to the side of her face, his thumb brushing over her cheek in hopes that she would just open her eyes.
she hears his voice, though it’s distant and it feels like he’s going in and out. she’s fading, fast by the looks of it, but his touch has her eyes opening even if only slightly. ‘ sc- ‘ she swallows the lump in her throat, tears spilling over. ‘ scott. ‘ there’s a sort of terror in her tone as her hand reaches up to open her jacket, revealing the bloody wound near her chest. bloodied hand reaching for his. she’s scared, she wants comfort. ‘ ━━ promise m-me you’ll get out of here. a━alive. ‘ is the first thing she says, debating with herself if she should say the words she’s been longing to, for a while. bullets fly at them, forcing all of her strength to grab him and pull him in to her, fast, even if it hurts. ‘ don’t be stupid and die. ‘
