I did a thing. I did a bad thing.
Well, it wouldn'tāt been seen as a bad thing in the world, but in ministry it is.Ā
For years Iāve been involved with World Visionsā 30 Hour Famine and I currently am organizing this yearsā one for my church. I started fundraising online and I didnāt realise it until after I had posted the link on facebook what I did wrong. To get peopleās attention and show how amazing 30 hour famine and world vision are, I unintentionally started talking about myself and all of the things that have happened because of participating in this event. I didnāt actually talk about what good World Vision itself is doing, and thatās not right. It essentially takes the same form of peopleās answers toĀ āwhy do you want to go on a mission trip?ā. The answers you get are something like this:Ā āBecause I want to make a difference in the world and experience something life changing.āĀ āI want to grow deeper with God and those in my church/school/group community.āĀ āI want to know that Iāve helped someone.āĀ
Now, those answers are all nice, but they all have to do with the change or benefit of the person speaking, not of those being helped. Essentially, thatās what I did, saying 30 Hour Famine and World Vision are amazing and important because of these things that have happened as a result of it in my life.Ā
Hereās what I wrote:
Help me continue to be apart of something much bigger than myself and provide food, clothing, shelter, education, health care and protection for children in developing countries.
It's because of World Vision and 30 Hour Famine that I discerned God's call to youth ministry.
It's because of World Vision and 30 Hour Famine that I want to sponsor at least one child with Zach when we get married later this year.
It's because of World Vision and 30 Hour Famine that I know how it feels to go without food for long hours - 270 hours to be exact once this year's Famine is completed.
It's because of World Vision USA and World Vision's 30 Hour Famine that I know I am a part of something greater and that I do have the ability to be one of those who are in the movement to banish hunger to the history books.
It's because of World Vision and 30 Hour Famine that $231.1 million was given to food insecure people in 2013 and that the child mortality rate from hunger has dropped from 54,000 to just over 18,000 in 52 years. Thatās just my reflection, and I went back and added things about how World Vision is actually helping the people who need it. Eh, itās probably not that significant but Ive been learning that people are turning ministry into āme me meā instead of āthem them themā and really, thatās what I did: Look at whatās happened in my life which is because of 30 Hour Famine. Thatās not how it should be. Knowing me Ill probably reflect again on this with practical theology to figure out what I should do c:
Its not declared, but Im now pursuing a double major in Christian Ministries and Biblical studies, along with a minor in social enterprise here at Gordon. :)
'Hello land dog, I am water dog.'
Never not reblog I love this sooo much
You know ministry is your life when you have a dream about it . that was probably the best dream ever. It was exactly what I wanted to do in ministry - a house for kids/ teens whose parents were checking out of their lives or had thrown them out of the house - some live there but others know its a safe place and they can hang out and come have food if thats something they are looking for even though they may still be living at home. I wish that dream could start up again when I close my eyes but I know it wont.
So excited to be getting subscriptions of this now! Got it for free for going to NYWC!
