Took my kids to see Phantom of the Opera. The arrangements are a bit dated, the acting is formal and lacking in emotion but the performance runs like clockwork on the sheer force of its professionalism. 37 years running and it still has a full house, an entire theatre is dedicated to performing only this show and there is a standing ovation at the end. It’s remarkable the enduring power of a 19th century story with a 1980’s score wrapped in a musical time warp. This is the studio I spent years working in and recording music with these guys. It’s in Podol, Kiev, in an old garage complex. It was cold, humid and musty and inspiring . With our band we played all over Ukraine and Russia. It was an amazing time with wonderful people. A bright blur of experiences, highs and lows, intense concerts and creativity. I am nauseous at seeing what has happened and what is happening now. It breaks my heart.
