Also I saw someone saying they’d never use squick because it’s such a silly, made-up sounding word and I thought that this has been part of the problem. Fandom itself isn’t silly; it can be deeply meaningful (it has been to me!) however things can be deeply meaningful and silly. We (society) have got to stop acting like being childish is the worst thing you can do. Embrace silly whimsy.

Let’s bring back “Fandom Wank” as a term/tag too, because honestly calling it “discourse” is too dignified a word for the vitriolic circle-jerk melodrama and trolling that’s been going on. The flame wars never ended, it’s just sometimes wrapped up in therapy speak to pretend it’s more civilized.

And let’s be real about trollish behavior in fandom. Telling someone they are mentally ill, or that they deserve to die, solely because they have a different opinion on a piece of fiction than you, is fuckin nasty ass troll shit behavior. Sockpuppet accounts, sending anon hate, spreading unfounded rumors and straight up lies about someone, all nasty ass piece of shit troll behavior.

This isn't really something most people would understand because most people don't experience this, but there's a really pervasive way how a diagnosis becomes your one character trait

While it is a part of your life, it's still only one part. There's still the rest of you, but sometimes people don't see that

You can live life, enjoy hobbies, work hard for a goal like everyone else, but then deal with people boiling your entire character down to one thing. Almost like they can't fathom that you might actually have something else in your life that exists outside of the illness

I do see people refer to Alfred's choice to avoid talking about it as him being in denial, but it's more like defiance. He says it himself. He refuses to be seen as a weak prince and wants to be remembered for being happy, dependable, and strong

He's probably used to people viewing this one part of his life as his entire life and wants people to care more about seeing the rest of it

He's very resiliant and a mentally strong person, pushing forward and working on himself despite the odds because he chose to and also because he wishes to be there for his family after experiencing loss after his father died from illness. He lives with it and he simply choses to enjoy all moments he has and be there for those who need him because despite everything, life is full of joys! Why wouldn't he just choose to enjoy life? Everyone has the right to, no matter how good or bad their health might be.

And honestly his choice has layers to it, he's incredibly selfless for wanting to spare them the worry of knowing this and how it could affect their time together, its logical because to some it could change how they view him but there's that layer of selfishness to it too that i find absolutely delicious.

While logical because he doesn't want them to see him any differently than a vibrant prince they can rely on, he's at the same time not allowing them to see ALL that he is! Alfred is someone positive, strong and a lover of working out but with the image he tries giving, he strengthens that image but keeps away from others those insecurities, any worries and just more "negative" things to himself while also not allowing himself to rely on others the way he lets others rely on him.
