The Saint Louis Central Library
1. Cass Gilbert who was also the architect behind the United States Supreme Court Building, Woolworth Building, Saint Louis Art Museum, designed this library after winning an architectural competition.
2. The first photo was taken in the Fine Arts Room. The ceiling there is a reproduction of La Badia in Florence, Italy.
3. The artist represented in the 5th photo (the ceiling) didn’t know what Dolphins looked like. The illustration within it that almost represents fish, was painted entirely on description alone. During that time period some people thought dolphins were serpentine, the reason for that being how they swam in pods. When they’d rise from the surface it looked like an elongated fish slithering through the water. (They also had no concept of swimming mammals, hence the scaly details at times).
4. The 7th photo shows the reproduction of Michelangelo’s design for the Laurentian Library in Florence, Italy.

Love Letters from the 19th century
Mona Saudi, tr. by Kamal Boullata, from Women of the Fertile Crescent: An Anthology of Modern Arabic Poetry by Arab Women
I have a plethora of photos I’ve taken at SLAM. This is by far one of the most intriguing museums I’ve ever set foot in. I’m excited to venture next door into Chicago, and have a day dedicated to some of the sights there too.
1. St. Helena and the Emperor Constantine
Presented to the Holy Trinity by the Virgin Mary, c. 1741-42 (Corrado Giaquinto)
2. An Italian Breastplate, c. 1570-75
3. Female Nude Supporting Two Heraldic Shields, debated who made this however the Museum suggests it was painted by Augustin Hirschvogel, and designed by Georg Pencz, c. 1500-1553
4. (From left to right)
- Langdebeve (Ox Tongue) Spear, c. 15th or early 16th Century
- Pollaxe (mazzapicchio) with the Arms of the City of Venice, c. Early 16th Century
- (unfortunately cannot remember or find the other weapons in this photo and the 6th)
5. The weapon behind me looks large, but it weighs around 8-9 pounds. The serrated edges were both for looks and for shredding through “objects.” (If only I could remember the name).
6. I was honestly shocked by this little hidden room on the bottom floor I get so overwhelmed at times.
7. Window Panel Fragment with Armored Saint, c. 15th century
the rumours are true, guys: I’m moving to the Shire
