Coming of Age
January 1998
“Happy birthday, Laila!” Everyone shouted as I blew out my candle.
Seventeen felt new. I wanted to spend this year differently than the last sixteen. I knew for a fact, I wanted to fall in love this time around the sun. Not the love I thought I felt last summer, but real love. I wanted it with the same person though. My soul knew it could love him. Even if he was avoiding making eye contact all night.
“Feliz cumpleanos, mija,” Mama cooed, only to me. “Did you make your wish good?”
“The best I could,” I mumbled. While Chris’ eyes never found me, mine never left him. “Can I cut my piece?”
“Not too big,” she urged. “I know it’s your birthday, but you have to be responsible.”
