Where The Lost Things Can Be Found

I checked myself out in the rearview mirror. My hair was combed and a clean shaven smile was looking back at me. I had my best collard shirt on and everything was ironed. I wanted to impress this girl, and so I actually dressed myself up for her. She said she doesn’t care too much for looks but I want do everything I can to make sure she likes me. I just want her to feel something close to how I do at least.

My heart was beating fast as I went to her door. I knocked and for the first time in a while, I was actually nervous about meeting someone. We had talked on the phone and we really seemed to connect, but for the first time I was going to actually look into those baby brown eyes I’d seen only in pictures. As she opened the door my heart stopped and an angel stepped outside. 

She had a soft glow to her blonde hair, and her eyes were just as big and beautiful as I had imagined. Her smile was brighter than any summer day. A rush of warmth flowed throughout my body, and I stuttered as I said, “Hi, I’m Ken nice to finally meet you.”

I drove us both to a nearby park and laid out a blanket. We talked for a while, and I as I landed one of my funniest jokes, I heard the answer I was looking for. In that moment I watched her laugh, and I realized what I was missing in my life. Like a puzzle missing a piece, I needed her laughter in my life. I didn’t want the carnal desires that so often consumed my peers. I just wanted her company.

I took her hand as we began to walk around the park. I shared with her stories of my past, mistakes made and triumphs had. She seemed genuinely interested in what I had to say, and engaged me in inquisitive conversation. Piece by piece I uncovered my soul and she took them in her hands with care. I had an overwhelming sense that I could trust her, and the way she looked at me made me believe her.

She shared things about herself as well. Small parts of her life that made her who she was. We talked about her future and who she wanted to be. I know I can help her grow but also that I will always appreciate who she is. 

We reached a small pond as the sun was setting, and small sparkles appeared over the surface. We found a small bench to sit down and she laid her head on my shoulder. She felt secure in my arms and my heart secured in hers. We sat for a while without speaking, comforted by each other’s silence. A calming confidence that we both felt the same way.
