Lily had been a complicated topic on James' life, he had fancied her for long. She was intelligent, kind, outspoken, she wasn't afraid to be truthful and of course she always saw the best in people. One of the main reasons that James wanted her to like him. But not matter what, it seemed that they weren't meant to be.
At school James made a fool of himself, and when he finally thought they had a chance, Lily moved on from the magical world. It wasn't until the Battle that he saw Lily again and things were complicated enough with Peter to actually try and think of what it meant for her to be back in the ranks.
He nodded at her question, "Every time I get to see a new team play I get excited, you learn a lot from watching other countries. But I still have this feeling that the cup would be more enjoyable for locals if their team made it to the finals, as not everyone is on the sport spirit."
"More enjoyable for the locals maybe, but I think you have an ulterior motive. You just don't want to learn all the names of these new players," she teased, nudging his shoulder. Sometimes it was nice to pretend they were back at school, bantering back and forth, even if it was confusing. For both of them. It wasn't fair to James trying to act like nothing had changed, and that nagging guilt she was used to feeling by now encompassed her.
"Is it weird that I'm here? In Sirius's tent?" There were so many other things she wanted to say, to apologise for, but for now this would have to do. "I know it's a big deal for you, and your career and... stuff. I really don't want to ruin it or make it strange for you." It was awkward, even her delivery was jilted and strained, but he'd always appreciated her frankness in the past. Or he used to. Maybe things had changed.
