Ulgrim's Dreadful Dictionary

Goad: To drive someone into taking a particular action. I goaded my hellhound into his bath by promising to give him a doggie treat when it was over.

Minions: Servants or followers. My minions are always happy to see me, especially on pay day.

Afflict: To bother or trouble. Ever since I put a jar of honey in my lunch box, I’ve been afflicted by hungry bears.

Barrage: A concentrated fire from artillery weapons. Cannons, catapults, and giants throwing bowling balls can all rain a heavy barrage on your enemies.

Imperative: Absolutely necessary. A can of oil is imperative for every villain who wears metal armor.

Unconscious: A state of being unawake and unaware. Shooting the unfriendly giant on the head with a cannonball to make him unconscious was an excellent idea. Not moving out of the way as he fell was a poor one.

Repulsive: Disgusting to the point of pushing someone away. The repulsive stench inside the gargoyle’s lunchbox made everyone around him step back. No doubt, only a creature made of stone can eat something that smells so terrible.

Skeptical: Doubtful. Showing a lack of faith in. I was skeptical when the sasquatch decided to take up ballet, but his large feet proved perfect for fast pirouetting.

Spree: A burst of excessive and unrestrained activity. As soon as he heard about my pyramid sale, the mummy grabbed his treasure and went on a shopping spree.

Muddle: To mix together in a confusing way. When the filling for my chocolate cups got muddled with the batter for my slime cakes, I turned a negative into a positive and made chocolate slime cupcakes.

Askance: In a sideways manner. I thought the headless horseman might be looking askance at me, but it was honestly hard to tell.

Recreation: Something which is done for fun. Every year, I send all my witches to a retreat where they partake in broomstick racing, cauldron brewing, yoga, and various other forms of recreation.

Nocturnal: Naturally active at night and asleep during the day. Ghosts, vampires, and werewolves are all nocturnal creatures and always want to visit me when I’m trying to sleep.

Copse: A small group of trees. Through many centuries of careful management, my family has grown a copse of man-eating trees into a full forest. Even though no one can get close enough to admire it, this is one of our greatest ecological achievements.

Accuse: To blame for something, especially something bad. I wouldn’t normally accuse the kraken of stealing my jelly beans, but I found his tentacle prints all over their empty jar.

Stow: To put away. It’s unwise to stow barrels of gunpowder and crates of fiery salamanders in the same compartment.

Refreshment: A light meal, usually with more drink than food. I think we should eat dinner before we go to the mummy’s party because his refreshments always have sand in them.
