Bats:

If a bat is found outside hanging on a wall or tree, it may be injured or sick, or it may just be a migrating bat that has stopped to rest. If a bat is found outside on the ground, it is probably injured, sick, or exhausted.

Bats do not build nests. Pregnant females of some species will gather together in nursery colonies when they are ready to have their pups. When bats nest indoors, they find areas that are dark, undisturbed, and have easy access to the outdoors so they can feed at night.

Some bats prefer hollow trees, some like caves and some use both at different times. Many bats shelter in buildings, behind hanging tiles and boarding or in roof spaces. For several weeks in summer, female bats gather in a maternity roost to have their babies. In winter, bats use hibernation roosts.

Bats are able to buzz.

Bats are cuddly and

affectionate mammals with sophisticated brains, but they also fly, hang upside down, and live in caves.

vampire bats are also very cuddly, at least with one another. Female bats cluster together for warmth, share food, and groom their cuddle-mates by licking each other's fur. Being groomed can reduce stress, lower heart rate, and promote cooperation.

Bats make excellent pets and will even purr in the hands of their owners, according to a Dublin zoologist and bat expert.

There are over 1,400 species of bats worldwide. Bats can be found on nearly every. part of the planet except in extreme deserts and polar regions. The difference in size and shape are equally impressive. Bats range in size from the Kitti's hog-nosed bat (also called the Bumblebee Bat) that weighs less than a penny — making it the world's smallest mammal - to the flying foxes, which can have a wingspan of up to 6 feet. The U.S. and Canada are home to about 45 species of bats and additional species are found in the U.S. territories in the Pacific and Caribbean.

Bat Week - held the last week in October - celebrates the role of bats in nature and all that these amazing creatures do for us.

The little brown bat lives up to its name. It weighs only a 1/4-1/3 of an ounce, is about 2 inches long, and has a 6-inch wingspan.

Not all bats hibernate. Even though bears and bats are the two most well-known hibernators, not all bats spend their winter in caves. Some bat species like the spotted bat survive by migrating in search of food to warmer areas when it gets chilly.

Owls, hawks and snakes eat bats, but that's nothing compared to the millions of bats dying from white-nose syndrome. The disease - named for a white fungus on the muzzle and wings of bats - affects hibernating bats and has been detected in 37 states and seven Canadian

provinces. This deadly syndrome has decimated certain species more than others.

It has killed over 90% of northern long-eared, little brown and tri-colored bat populations in fewer than 10 years. Scientists are working to understand the disease. You can help by avoiding_places where bats are hibernating. If you do go underground, decontaminate your clothing, footwear and gear to help with not spreading this disease to other areas.

Over 300 species of fruit depend on bats for pollination. Bats help spread seeds for nuts, figs and cacao - the main ingredient in chocolate. Without bats, we also wouldn't have plants like agave or the iconic saguaro cactus.

Just like a hummingbird, the lesser long-nosed bat can hover at flowers, using its 3-inch-long tongue — equal to its body length to feed on nectar in desert environments.

Each night, bats can eat their body weight in insects, numbering in the thousands! This insect-heavy diet helps foresters and farmers protect their crops from

pests.

Bats are the only flying mammal. While the flying squirrel can only glide for short distances, bats are true fliers. A bat's wing resembles a modified human hand — imagine the skin between your fingers larger, thinner and stretched. This flexible skin membrane that extends between each long finger bone and many movable joints make bats agile fliers.

California leaf-nosed bats exit a cave at Joshua Tree National Park. You can easily distinguish these bats by their leaf-like noses and large ears.

Bats may be small, but they're fast little creatures. How fast a bat flies depends on the species, but they can reach

speeds over 100 miles per hour according to new research.

Conservation efforts are helping bat species recover. At least 12 types of U.S. bats are endangered, and more are threatened.

These amazing animals face a multitude of threats including habitat loss and disease, but we're working to change that. A unique international conservation partnership in the southwestern U.S. and Mexico has been working to help one species, the lesser long-nosed bat, recover to the point it can be removed from the Endangered Species list. In 1988, there were thought to be fewer than

1,000 bats at the 14 known roosts range wide. There are now an estimated 200,000 bats at 75 roosts!

The ancestors of the endangered Hawaiian Hoary Bat traveled over 3,600 kilometers from the Pacific Coast almost 10,000 years ago to become Hawaii's state land mammal.

The longest-living bat is 41 years old. It's said that the smaller the animal, the shorter its lifespan, but bats break that rule of longevity. Although most bats live less than 20 years in the wild, scientists have documented six species that life more than 30 years. In 2006, a tiny bat from Siberia set the world record at 41 years.

Like cats, bats clean themselves. Far from being dirty, bats spend a lot of time grooming themselves. Some, like the Colonial bat, even groom each other. Besides having sleek fur, cleaning also helps control parasites.

The spotted bat gets its name from its distinct appearance of black and white spotted fur.

Another interesting fact about the spotted bat — it has the largest ears of any North American species.

Dogs aren't the only ones with pups. Baby bats are called pups, and a group of bats is a colony. Like other mammals, mother bats feed their pups breastmilk, not insects. Most bats give birth to a single pup! There is at least one species that commonly has twins and that is the eastern red bat. Momma bats form nursery colonies in spring in caves, dead trees and rock crevices.

Bats benefit from maintaining a close-knit roosting group because they increase reproductive success, and it is important for rearing pups.

Bats are inspiring medical marvels. About

80 medicines come from plants that rely on bats for their survival. While bats are not blind, studying how bats use echolocation has helped scientists develop navigational aids for the blind. Research on bats has also led to advances in vaccines.

Innies or Outies? Humans aren't the only ones with belly buttons. With a few exceptions, nearly all mammals have navels because of mom's umbilical cord, and bats are no different. Now the real question is: Innies or outies?

The Mexican long-tongued bat is a vital pollinator in desert systems. They have a long, bristle-like tongue, allowing them to sip nectar from agave and cacti.

Bats CAN be affectionate towards us, however they do seem to show favoritism toward certain caregivers.

The heavily perfumed sac-winged bats sing complex courtship songs along with their odorous displays, but some bats have a different taste in music that's a little more hard-core. Hammer-headed bat (Hypsignathus monstrosus) males advertise for mates by performing in a lek.

Tell an adult, such as a teacher, nurse, parent, school guard, or police officer, right away if you have touched a bat or a bat has touched you. There is medicine that can keep you from getting rabies. For the medicine to work well, it must be given soon after contact with a bat.

Bats are not blind and do not become entangled in peoples' hair. If a bat flies near or toward your head, it is probably hunting insects that have been attracted by your body heat.

Echolocating bats continuously emit special vocalizations, known as echolocation calls, and perceive their surroundings by analyzing the returning echoes. In this work we show that bats can use these vocalizations for the recognition of individuals, despite the fact that their main function is not communication.

Bat bites are uncommon in the United States.

About 1% of emergency room visits in the United States are due to animal bites, according to 2021 research . More than 95% of these bites are from dogs and cats. It's critical to seek immediate medical attention any time you suspect you've been bitten by a bat.

According to celebrity psychic and mystic Inbaal Honigman, seeing a bat could be a sign that you're on the precipice of an unknown transformation or perspective change. "Bats are unusual and unique, giving them the message of doing things differently," she says.

Most small mammals have very short lives (often only 1 year), but bats are the exception and have relatively long lives. One study showed that bats live on average about 4 years,

while another study showed bats may live about 16 years on average. The maximum lifespan reported for bats in the wild is more than 30 years.

Bats do not like lights, bright or otherwise, but that doesn't mean that lighting will work to get rid of them. In fact, using bright lights to try and repel

You can also use mothballs, peppermint, eucalyptus, and other strongly scented essential oils as repellents. Place or apply deterrents near potential entry points and roosting sites to make those areas less appealing. The effectiveness may vary depending on the species of bat involved.

The researchers selected the vampire bat to compare for the first time different ways to sequence olfactory receptors. The vampire bat relies on its sense of smell to find its prey and has a comparable number of olfactory receptors to humans (approximately 400).

If a bat gets close to a human, it's usually because they are curious about insects that are naturally attracted to people.

The first sign that a bat's body has started to decompose will be it stiffens. Within a week, the bat's body will release chemicals as decomposition begins, which will have a strong odor. The smell of a dead bat will often be noticed before the body is found.

You should always avoid directly handling a dead bat. You should use a shovel or wear thick gloves to pick up the dead bat and put it into a strong plastic bag or container, spray with disinfectant, close the container securely, and dispose of it with your garbage. Thoroughly wash your hands and any clothing that comes into contact with the bat.

Do not evict bats from your home when dependent young are present (May through August). Many states specifically prohibit excluding

bats when they are raising young. Early autumn is the best time to evict bats.

fruit bats are American Samoa's only native mammal. They do not suck people's blood but instead feed on fruits, nectar, and seeds of trees. Tell students that fruit bats inhabit the tropical rainforest ecosystem where they sleep, feed, and fly around.

Many kinds of fruit including figs, mangoes, tomatoes, and dates are favored foods of the fruit bat.

Nearly all of the communication calls of the Egyptian fruit bat in the roost are emitted during aggressive pairwise interactions, involving squabbling over food or perching locations and protesting against mating attempts.

Known to be particularly loyal, the Vampire Bat is so altruistic that it shares the blood it takes from its prey with its best "friends." They’ll also feed neighbors in need, but will hold a grudge

They're more likely to do so if they're closely related. However, they expect to have their favor returned.

"Vampire bats are definitely Tit for Tat. If someone needs blood, they'll share it. The way that they do that is really gross-they regurgitate it into their mouths. The next time they're hungry, they expect to get blood from that same neighbor. If he doesn't return the favor, they won't share with him again," said Orr.

Various bats species can delay reproduction at different stages of development. One of the most common is storing sperm. Certain species of bat can meet, mate, and then store the sperm for later. In Utah and throughout other parts of North America, some bats mate in the fall or in the winter, but the sperm doesn't fertilize the egg until the spring. Sometimes, they store the sperm for up to 200 days. Other bat species delay when the fertilized egg implants into the uterus.

"A female allows fertilization to happen, then implantation happens, and then right when the placenta begins to form, there's a pause, sort of like suspended animation," Orr said. "What's cool about it is that there's no cell growth at all. The species that I studied do that for a couple months which is pretty impressive. People often tell me, '1 was pregnant, and that would have been nice."

If a bat finds an especially juicy fruit spot, they'll share the information with their batty friends. Studies on species that find fruit have shown that they go back and say, 'Hey! I got some fruit over here, How they're communicating that information is less known, but it's very clear that if a bat is prevented from going back to the cave, it takes their roost mates longer to find the spot.

Bats are really good neighbors. Orr studied a cave in Mexico where 15 different bat species shared the space.

Each species were in separate parts of the cave, depending on their preference-some bats like to roost in the Twilight Zone near the front of the cave, and others need to be a way back in the dark areas. So they spatially segregate the cave so that everybody's kind of happy in the preferred habitat and they peacefully get along with other species.

Bats are a symbol of good luck in Chinese culture so every year a bat festival is held. Also, a gift with a bat image will bring the recipient prosperity. Mexican culture has a bat god depicted in Anasazi pottery carvings.

Smelly poisons:

•Some poisons have a strong, unpleasant odor, such as bitter almonds, burnt rope, disinfectant, garlic, hydrogen sulfide, or rotten eggs.

Odorless poisons:

•Some poisons are odorless, such as nerve agents like VX and sarin.

Poisons that smell like something else

•Some poisons can smell like something else, such as mouthwash, which smells minty, or benzene, which smells sweet.

Poisons that can impair your sense of smell

•Some poisons, like the venom of the red-bellied black snake, can impair your sense of smell.

Other signs of poisoning include:

* Burns or redness around the mouth and lips

* Breath that smells like chemicals, such as gasoline or paint thinner

* Vomiting

Thallium is tasteless and odorless and has been used by murderers as a difficult to detect poison. It is found in trace amounts in the earth's crust.

Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas that has no smell or taste. Breathing it in can make you unwell. It can kill if you're exposed to high levels.

How to Tell if Someone has Been Poisoned

* Very large or very small pupils.

* Rapid or very slow heartbeat.

* Rapid or very slow breathing.

* Drooling or very dry mouth.

* Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.

* Sleepiness or hyperactivity.

* Confusion.
