Pioneering Elvis information website, elvisconcerts.com, celebrates an incredible 30 years online this year. Creator and webmaster Francesc Lopez has curated an unrivaled archive of rare facts, stats, and in-depth insights into Elvis’ life as a professional touring entertainer. There is also a comprehensive database with an easy search function so that you can explore an extensive library of information by multiple criteria.
Our written interview with Francesc has been updated for this 30th anniversary. We find out about the technical challenges he faced during the internet’s formative years, and explore in detail some of the features that make this site an essential, trusted source. We ask a couple of ‘fans’ questions as well, and expand on some of Francesc’s thoughts and recommendations with additional context, background and links.
Huge thanks to Francesc for taking the time to answer our questions again, and for his tireless work in creating and maintaining one of the most informative, fact-based and accurate Elvis sites online.
On a personal level, we owe a huge debt of gratitude to Francesc as we've relied hugely on elvisconcerts.com for all the background information that accompanies our bootleg concert uploads, our Tumblr posts here, and the occasional podcast as well.
If you love a little nerdy Elvis history, elvisconcerts.com is an essential destination, and you'll never stop making new discoveries there.

Finished up a little project that I'd been toying around with, in an attempt to use up some leftover art material.
Also, the curve of the letters was ENTIRELY accidental. Everything was going to be straight and aligned, but when I was testing the unglued layout of the "L", I accidentally knocked the canvas and the little rhinestones shifted into a delightful curve. That changed everything for me and I just went with it. I do like the fading I did around the edges but the crazing was also unintentional. That's just what happened after the paint dried and sat for a little while. But I love that too. Happy accidents.

For a long time I felt like an imposter calling myself an Elvis fan. He’s just a figure of such depth and misunderstanding whose legacy is so embedded in our popular culture that merely enjoying his music or the ‘idea’ of him didn’t seem sufficient to earn that label. And the fact that there are a great many people walking this Earth who have been fans longer than I’ve been ALIVE- yeah, it felt disrespectful and insincere to just suddenly declare myself a part of that community.
But something shifted recently. Today at work I was thinking about how excited I am for EPiC and I realized… I finally feel like I crossed the threshold. I get to experience new Elvis content for the first time as a fan with all the rest of you! It might sound silly, but I always felt like I was skirting the edge of an exclusive club… and it wasn’t until today that I realized I’m now lounging comfortably within it 🥹 All it took was 3 trips to Graceland, 2 trips to Vegas, listening, learning and thinking about this man every single day for 1,295 days to get there… but hey! I’m an Elvis fan and it feels damn good to say as much and really, truly believe it 🤍⚡️

Following the Aloha From Hawaii dress rehearsal concert, held during the evening of January 12, 1973, soundchecks and technical rehearsals continued all through the following day. Producer and Director Marty Pasetta was under crushing pressure; television cables were interfering catastrophically with the sound, and they suddenly lost power to the stadium. In a later interview, Marty Pasetta said that someone had cut the powerlines, although he didn't specify whether accidentally or on purpose, but other reports stated that all the broadcast equipment had overloaded the HIC's electrics.
Enter the unsung hero of Aloha, Don Ho, a hugely popular Hawaiian entertainer with whom Marty Pasetta had previously worked on TV shows. According to Pasetta, Don Ho mobilised the US Navy, who delivered truckloads of lead sheeting to insulate the cables, and he organised a crew of electricians who restored power just in the nick of time.
Don Ho, an unsung hero without whom the entire project could have fallen over at the last minute
The satellite concert began at 12.30 am, Sunday January 14th. As the live concert began, Marty Pasetta recalled that an assistant director froze under the pressure and they missed the first seconds of the show.
After the show, and once the audience had left, Elvis, the band and the crew were back on stage to record some insert tracks for the repackaged special that would air in the US in April. Meanwhile, Marty Pasetta also had to supervise the editing of the delayed telecast to Europe.
The recording of the insert tracks was a test of endurance, and it was obvious that everyone's nerves were just about at their limit by this point.
Everyone made a mistake - Marty Pasetta made a technical error and apologised. (Everyone is entitled to one stupid mistake, Elvis said). The band made a mistake, to Elvis' slight annoyance; a studio hand coughed and messed up a take, and Elvis himself stumbled over some lyrics. Marty Pasetta asked for a couple of retakes, and Elvis dutifully complied.
The final track they recorded was Early Morning Rain, which might have been one that could have benefited from another try, but by this point everyone had had enough, and Marty Pasetta was smart enough to call it quits.
During this session, Colonel Parker reported on the initial ratings for the live broadcast
According to Elvis biographer Peter Guralnick;
“…Colonel came in as they were recording Early Morning Rain, the last number, and announced proudly that they had gotten the highest rating ever registered in Japan, with 37.8% of the viewers in a highly competitive six-network market. There was a real sense of jubilation in the air…”
Some other audience figures (as provided by RCA publicity) - 91% of the Philippine population watched, 25% of Hong Kong’s population watched, from where it was also relayed into Macau and China; it reached 70 - 80% of the TV sets in South Korea and, according to Rocco Laginestra (RCA Records President), was also relayed by the Armed Forces Network to South Vietnam. (Bearing in mind the Vietnam war was ongoing).
Colonel Parker wrote Elvis a heartfelt letter of congratulations, admiration and thanks, in what might have been one of the last moments of personal affection between them.
