This has been a busy summer for hip-hop. Here's my take on the most prominent releases.
J. Cole, Born Sinner (A-)
More than a month after it's release, this dense little gem is still being dissected. Great bars, solid theme throughout the work, and production that compels you to continue listening. North Carolina has another reason to be proud. Definitely worth copping.
Kanye West, Yeezus (B)
Commerce veiled as art. Great production and a great rollout-campaign, but I felt this was lyrically all over the place. 'Ye needs to step back and let his work shine without having the need to place himself in front of it. Better listening to this on Spotify.
Mac Miller, Watching Movies with the Sound Off (C+)
I like this kid. I think he'd be great to have a drink or some other illicit material with. He sounds more comfortable on this release, and even a bit edgier/darker than previous stuff. Nonetheless, after the trip wears off, you're left empty in search of the next hit. Spotify will suffice.
Wale, The Gifted (B-)
Folarin steps it up for this release, but something still seems out of step. Maybe it's his delivery, but outside of some outstanding tracks ("LoveHate Thing" etc), it doesn't inspire enough to survive too many replays past the summer.
Jay-Z, Magna Carta Holy Grail (B+)
Jay-Z (and Samsung) pulled out all the stops on this magnimous release with no expense being spared on promotion, features and production. Only thing missing was Hov's passion as he is further and further removed from the streets that made him. Not mad at the progression though. Hope he finds a way to connect with the average (wo)man on the next.
