Alright anon, apologies for taking so long with this but this question is not easy to answer for a couple reasons:

1. As you’ve probably heard from other bilingual/multilingual people, the English language lacks the depth that a lot of our native languages offer, which makes it very hard to encapsulate the meaning of certain sentiments and feelings through an English translation.

2. Urdu poetry has certain things about it that you only learn if you have grown up speaking the language and it’s not something that can be taught or explained even if you end up learning the language as an adult and become fluent in it. I’m not doing a good job explaining but Urdu poetry just has these layers that are hard for just anyone to comprehend. My mom majored in the Urdu language and that’s the only reason I have some partial understanding of the true meaning of Urdu poetry but it’s still not the best.

3. I speak English 24/7 but I started learning this language in 6th grade, before that I couldn’t even understand English cartoons. So I’m not the expert on English vocabulary and maybe there are words that can translate the song better but I don’t think I know them because my vocabulary is pretty limited.

Alright so let me get into the translation here. This is what I reblogged yesterday and the translation did not feel accurate to me. HOWEVER, this is the best someone could do to try and translate this into a few sentences, my translation is going to be too long to make an edit out of, so no judgement or criticism to op for translating it the way they did. Also this could’ve just been how they interpreted it and that is totally okay also. I’m not here to claim that I’m the only one who’s correct with this translation.

Ok so the first line: are you the full moon or the sun?

Full translation: you could be the moon on the 14th night (the moon is full on the 14th night) or you could be the sunlight from the sun when it’s at its brightest (picture golden hour sunlight)

Second line: Whatever you are, I swear to god (no need for a full translation here, this is accurate)

Third line: You are beyond compare

Full translation: lajawaab is such a beautiful word and it sounds like absolute heaven when zayn sings it. What it means is basically the lover in question is someone who the songwriter just cannot comprehend the uniqueness and exquisite nature of, they are enamored, without words or answers for how exactly to specify how beautiful and special this person is. This is still not a fully accurate description of the word but it’s the best I can do with what I have.

Also just one more thing, chaudhvin ka chaand (the moon on the 14th night), almost doesn’t need a word for word translation because it’s so often used to refer to a lover that it’s basically just a euphemism at this point. It’s like I hear the phrase and I instantly know that it means lover because it’s used so often in Urdu poetry for someone to refer to their lover that it’s just common knowledge at this point.
