“ me?  yeah,  i’m  okay—  it’s  clark. ”   words  come  out  quicker  than  intended,  a  tell  she  has  yet  to  learn  to  disguise.  lois  lane  didn’t  do  helpless,  didn’t  do  worried  girlfriend  …  but  here  she  was.  “ he’s  been  mia  for  two  days. ”  a  beat.   “ and  before  you  say  it—  i  know  how  he  can  handle  his  own,  but  he  usually  checks  in  by  now.  even  just  a  text  or  something. ”  hand  drags  through  her  raven  hair,  as  she  lets  out  a  deep  exhale.  “ i  wouldn’t  sound  the  alarm  unless  i  had  to,  but  i’ve  hit  a  dead  end,  and  …  i  don’t  know,  quill.  have  you  heard  from  him?  anything  at  all? ”

" is that what we wanna call it? " clark spoke with a toothy smile, tone light and playful with teasing amusement. he relied on the tone he convey to lift some of needless tension off her shoulders. " i was thinking more on the lines of first attempt. "

she  drops  into  her  chair,  reaching  for  the  nearest  lifeline:  her  mug  filled  with  mostly  sugar  and  barely  any  coffee.  one  sip  in  and  his  words  catch  her  off  guard.  suddenly,  she’s  coughing  mid-swallow,  eyes  going  wide.  “ woah—  slow  your  roll,  buckaroo. ”   hand  shoots  up,  ultimately  trying  to  put  a  stop  to  this  whole  thing  …  but  alas,  curiosity  wins.  “ first  attempt?  you  do  realize  that  implies  there’s  a  second,  right? ”
